Position Title: Assistant Director of Special Education / Principal of Special Education
Assignment Location: Dakota County Technical College (Main Campus), plus other locations in Dakota County. Overseeing the Developmental Disabilities, Academics, Socialization, and Health Services (DASH) and Transitional Education Service Alternative Program (TESA)
Hours per Day: 8.0
Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2025
Contract Length: 12-month continuing contract
Salary: Per the Assistant Director/Principal contract

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The assistant director/principal leads the TESA and DASH programs for Intermediate School District 917 focused on implementation of the district’s core values. In this role the administrator focuses on leading, modeling, and encouraging staff and students to live into the core values. Of particular focus in site level leadership are the core values of communication, innovation, collaboration, integrity, and personalization. The leader directs the implementation of special education programming, including academic as well as social/emotional learning, oversees staff and students, and ensures district as well as state and federal policy and procedures are followed. The assistant director/principal plays a vital role in providing leadership to create and sustain an environment that is focused on stewardship, equity, and diversity.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Providing overall direction of the program personnel and students for daily operations.
Guide continuous improvement of programs by utilizing data to inform programming decisions and planning for staff and student success. - Facilitate activities for student learning and staff professional development.
Provide supervision, evaluation, and support for staff, including recruitment and retention. - Ensure adherence to requirements for due process as well as other records and reports.
- Act as the primary liaison between sites, other district programs, member district staff, students, and families.
Consult, communicate, and work cooperatively with teams to provide appropriate programming for students and maintain a positive environment, including facilitation of a variety of meetings. - Comply with School Board policies and administrative practices, including those procedures outlined in the staff culture guide and student handbook.
- Develop and maintain budgets.
- Provide physical site management to maintain safety of all students, staff, and the environment.
- Use flexible thinking and adaptability to address student needs and respond with composure in crisis, when necessary.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree and Minnesota Professional Educators Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) licensure in Special Education, with administrative licensure (Director of Special Education and Principal preferred).
Administrative experience working with ASD, DCD, EBD, and mental health. - Knowledge of school administration principles, practices, and procedures, laws and administrative policies.
- Ability to understand student rights pertaining to disciplinary procedures.
Thorough skill at operating database systems with general skill at operating standard accounting software and other office technologies. - High level of skill at presenting ideas effectively in both written and oral format and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with administrators, member district personnel, local law enforcement, staff, and students that is maintained during high-stress and crisis situations.
- Experience with implementing positive behavior interventions and supports and the due process requirements for special education.
- Willingness and ability to work with students receiving intense special education services.
Experience with program development/change on a district-level, with experience with transition frameworks preferred. - Ability to become certified in Professional Crisis Management or similar crisis intervention program upon hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, bending, leaning, and repetitive motions.
Occasionally requires exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. - Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement, observe general surroundings and activities, perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly via vocal communication.
- Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may require wearing of personal protective equipment.
- Locations are generally moderately noisy.
