Provide strategic oversight, coordination, and accountability for the effective delivery of special education services K-12. This role is responsible for driving instructional best practices, ensuring program fidelity, and promoting positive outcomes for students with disabilities, under the supervision of the Director of Special Services.
Provides leadership and guidance in the implementation and continuous improvement of special education programming across grades K-12.
Directs and manages all aspects of Extended School Year (ESY) programming, including staffing, student placement, and curriculum oversight.
Leads the coordination of district-wide due process procedures and ensures compliance with all state and federal special education mandates, including the management of SpEd Forms.
Leading the legal meeting required when a student with a disability faces a suspension that exceeds 10 days, determining if the behavior was a result of their disability.
Mediating between parents and teachers when there is a disagreement over services to avoid costly Due Process hearings.
Facilitate staff professional development opportunities for staff.
Managing a diverse team, including Special Education teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and School Psychologists.
Act as the central liaison between school administration, specialized providers, and families during high-stakes transition periods.
Acts as the District Representative for Intermediate District 917; representing the home district’s interests in collaborative planning, placement decisions, and student transitions.
Collaborates closely with building administrators to oversee the strategic alignment of master schedules with student service mandates, ensuring compliance with IEP delivery.
Acts as a critical advisor during disciplinary proceedings to ensure procedural safeguards under IDEA are upheld, and designs transition protocols that facilitate student success across educational environments.
Requirements
Master's Degree in Special Education or Educational Leadership strongly preferred; Bachelor's Degree in Special Education required, along with a minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience.
Director of Special Education licensure or enrollment in an accredited program for licensure. Principal Licensure considered with significant special education background.
Thorough understanding of state and federal special education law, including a focus on current trends and litigation impacting special services.
Thorough understanding of state due process procedures and experience in resolution facilitation.
Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate collaborative problem-solving across multidisciplinary teams, including staff, students, parents, and administrators from diverse cultures.
Demonstrated expertise in evaluating and developing comprehensive district special education programs.
Knowledge of and experience in implementing research-based service delivery models to support the full continuum of special education.
Proficiency in the comprehensive evaluation process and data-driven decision making.
Successful experience in designing, leading, and evaluating high-impact professional development activities for instructional staff.
Exceptional oral and written communications skills and the ability to establish collaborative, results-oriented relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
Strong organizational, task management, and time management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
