Position Summary: Owatonna Middle School is seeking a student-focused educator to lead our Yearbook / Journalism Arts program. This position gives students the opportunity to develop skills in photography, graphic design, visual storytelling, and multimedia communication while producing the school’s annual yearbook.
The teacher will guide students through the full publication process—from gathering stories and photos to designing layouts and preparing the final product. The course emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and authentic learning experiences where students help capture and tell the story of their school year.
Responsibilities:
– Teach middle school courses focused on yearbook production and journalism arts.
– Guide students through the planning, design, and publication of the Owatonna Middle School yearbook.
– Provide instruction in photography, graphic design, page layout, and visual storytelling.
– Support students in developing written and multimedia content, including captions, interviews, and short articles.
– Coordinate student photography coverage of school events and activities.
– Teach and model responsible journalism practices, including interviewing, fact-checking, and ethical media use.
– Support students in working collaboratively to meet publication timelines and production deadlines.
– Organize digital photos and yearbook assets and collaborate with staff to ensure broad representation of student experiences.
Qualifications:
– Valid Minnesota Art or Language Arts teaching license (or ability to obtain before the start of the school year)) required.
– Ability to create an engaging, student-centered learning environment required.
– Experience or interest in photography, graphic design, journalism, or multimedia communication – preferred.
– Familiarity with digital design and publishing tools used in yearbook production – preferred.
– Experience supporting project-based learning – preferred.
About Owatonna Middle School:
Owatonna Middle School serves approximately 1,000 students in grades 6–8. Our staff works collaboratively to create meaningful learning experiences that support students academically, socially, and creatively.
Salary:
Based on candidate’s education and experience per the OEA Master Agreement.
