1.0 FTE Student Support Specialist @ McGuire Middle School POSITION SUMMARY: The Student Support Specialist enhances student learning by providing strategic services to identify and address social-emotional-behavioral issues that interfere with school success. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties: Intervention Services *Provide support to students with organizational, work completion and/or self-advocacy needs *Serve as a member of the building student assistant team; provide building staff with social-emotional-mental health resources and instructional strategies to support quality pre-referral interventions *Serve as a building resource for mental health; help others to recognize early warning signs and overt indicators of student distress or abuse and to take appropriate referral, intervention or reporting action *Consult with building staff regarding student specific social-emotional-mental health issues *Provide a positive, safe environment in which students are encouraged to actively engage in their learning *Serve as a resource and support for skills, grief and chemical health groups and implement classroom interventions in areas of concern for the students *Provide crisis intervention and support to students, parents and staff Collaboration *Assist in risk assessments of students with discipline and attendance issues *Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians; communicate with families about available mental health services and how to access the services *Serve as a liaison with community agencies and resources; assist with referrals as necessary *Locate and mobilize community resources to support students and families *Serve as contact person for students returning to school from hospitalization for or treatment of mental health and/or chemical health issues *Collaborate regularly with district chemical health specialist Professional Development *Stay current with best practices in social-emotional-behavioral evaluation and intervention *Conduct staff development activities on topics related to social-emotional-mental health issues *Act in a professional and ethical manner and adhere at all times to the professional Code of Ethics
