College and Career Pathway Counselor
White Bear Lake Area High School is working to develop career pathway opportunities to support students to identify career opportunities in industries that provide promise for future job demand, sustainable wages, and potential for industry-recognized credentials. By linking students to career focused courses and closing the opportunity gap of students completing college credit courses we will better prepare students to be contributing, independent adults. To support the development of this program we were awarded a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education to hire a college and career pathway counselor. The college and career pathway counselor will have two essential requirements. First, they will provide leadership and support to students, teachers, and administrators who develop and maintain our career pathway program. Second, they will manage programming in the counseling office to maintain continuity to support the department, especially in regard to college planning. Supervised by: Principal or designee Department: Counseling Works with: 9-12 counselors (8), College and Career Office Secretary (1 at each campus) Funding: The position is funded by the District and MDE Support our Students Grant. The grant funds the position 3:1 in years. List of duties/tasks to be performed: Career Pathway Leadership and Support Maintain best practice knowledge of school career pathway development and serve as a knowledgeable resource in the development of school career pathways. Serve as liaison to industry representatives to promote partnership opportunities for career pathway courses. Provide career counseling support to career pathway participants by defining goals, monitoring progress, and creating plans for short and long term goal attainment. Develop and maintain metrics to measure success and growth of career pathway programs. Lead and promote the student recruitment process for career pathway courses. Monitor and support students accessing college level courses for the first time. Develop and manage career pathway internship opportunities. Work with administrators and department leaders to develop concurrent enrollment agreements with Century College and other institutions of higher learning. Serve on District World’s Best Workforce Committee. High School Counseling Department AP Coordinator – coordinate testing, communication to teachers, students, families, and professional development opportunities for teachers. Coordinate Evening Parent Sessions – facilitate, schedule and promote post-secondary planning educational opportunities for parents at least five times each year. Coordinate Strive Program and serve as instructor of Strive Advisory – work with Strive, LLC, maintain and teach advisory lesson, incorporating Strive volunteers. Local Scholarship Coordinator – communicate with donors, Foundations, promote opportunities, coordinate selection committees. Manage NCAA Clearinghouse – assure high school courses are reflected properly. Serve as primary communicator. Stay current on trends in post secondary placement and offer support to grade level counselors related to common app, coalition app, changes to FAFSA process, to include admission to highly selective college. Counseling webpage updates – work with counseling department and clerical staff to assure the counseling web page is up to date. Advisory/Ramp Up Coordinator – work with classroom teachers and the counseling department to coordinate and support implementation of advisor materials. Career Event Coordinator – manage career event(s) for students in grades 11-12. Recruit speakers and schedule students.
