Special Education Assistant (Multiple positions)

Effective immediately, the Human Resources Department will accept online applications for the position of Special Education Assistant (multiple positions) at our Middle School and High School for the 2023-24 school year.  This position works 6.5 hours per day plus half hour duty-free lunch, Monday – Friday, school days only.   Riding morning and/or afternoon bus routes may be included with this position.  The rate of pay is $20.16 per hour, based on the 2021-23 Master Agreement between SSP #6 and Local No. 7312, Educational Support Professionals.   This position reports to the Director of Student Services and Building Administrator.

Job Summary
Assist special education teacher in supporting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in regular and special education setting.  Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-care, behavior regulation, and instruction programs.  Accompany special education students on bus routes as required in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Job Functions

Assist students off the bus and into their first class of the day as needed.
Assist students with clothing when needed, clearing locker and escort students to the afternoon or transportation.
Accompany special education students on bus routes as required in the student’s IEP.   As assigned, ride the bus and supervise students as they enter and leave the bus, monitor for behavioral or physical needs to ensure student safety.
Assist students with self-care activities including but not limited to toileting, dressing, eating as required by Case Manager.
Assist students to be safe and socially appropriate on the playground or recess activities.
Follow case manager or special education teacher directions in modifying or accommodating student assignments.
Work within the special education program such as SUN or EBD to assist students with teacher assigned tasks.  Modify or accommodate as directed by the special education teacher
Regularly monitor student progress using collection techniques developed by case manager or special education teacher.
Follow Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Positive Behavior Intervention Support Plan (PBISP) as directed by case manager.
Perform accurate and timely reporting of services and progress for student’s IEP, Third Party Billing records, report cards, progress notes and/or conferences as directed by case manager.
Participate in all required trainings as requested.
Adhere to staff and program guidelines and district procedures and policies.
Cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, staff, families and community members.
Demonstrate prompt, regular and reliable attendance.
Other duties as assigned.

Human Resources Specialist

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that daily teacher and paraprofessional absences are filled with qualified reserve teachers and substitute paraprofessionals.  Upon arrival at work, quickly identify the unfilled absences in Frontline Absence Management and communicate with qualified reserves and substitutes (including making phone calls) to fill the open daily needs prior to the start of the school day.  Communicate with school office staff regarding any remaining daily openings to ensure coverage is arranged prior to the scheduled start time.
  2. Be proactive throughout the day to ensure reserve and substitute positions are filled the next day.
  3. Gather and issue daily, weekly and monthly reports on fill rates and other relevant data.
  4. Oversee the recruitment process for reserve teachers and paraprofessional substitutes.
  5. Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract and retain high quality reserves and substitutes.
  6. Oversee the selection and onboarding process for reserve teachers and para substitutes.  Screen online applications, conduct reference and background checks, approve applicants for hire, and coordinate the onboarding process.
  7. Oversee professional development for reserves and substitutes.
  8. Manages the district’s Frontline Absence Management system.
  9. Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting support for district employees on the use of the system.
  10. Provide detailed reports and analyzes data regarding reserve and substitute usage.
  11. Communicates regularly with reserve teachers and para substitutes regarding district job opportunities, training sessions, district news, and performance feedback and coaching.
  12. Verify teaching licensure for all reserve teachers and advises reserves of upcoming license expiration.
  13. Support administrators in the use of the electronic teacher evaluation system.
  14. Support recruiting efforts for the department.
  15. Perform HR department clerical and administrative duties including supporting the Executive Assistant and HR Assistant
  16. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level and special projects as assigned

Responsibilities and tasks include:

Performing general housekeeping tasks to include but not limited to dust mopping and wet mopping classrooms, restrooms and hallway floors, cleaning restrooms, stripping and sealing resilient and hard surface floors, washing windows, walls, lockers.  Vacuum all carpeted areas of the building; Housekeeping tasks to be performed according to established district systems and cleaning standards;
Securing the facility; arming and disarming the security system; and
Reporting vandalism or unauthorized individuals in buildings.
Maintaining building grounds including, but not limited to, watering, mowing, trimming, pruning shrubs, trees, weeding, removing paper and debris from school yard and along fence lines.
Performing snow removal and keeping sidewalks free of ice
Maintaining and submitting all appropriate reports and logs in a timely manner.
Painting district facilities to include but not limited to gym lines, minor touch-up, etc.;
Maintaining building equipment per department guidelines
Setting up and taking down equipment including but not limited to tables, chairs, band shell, etc.
Responding to questions and providing excellent customer service to facility users.
Performing other comparable duties of a like or similar nature as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include:
High School diploma or GED

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
Computer skills, including proper use of email communication
Knowledge of all safety precautions applicable to trade.
Knowledge of cleaning techniques and materials
Caring for and repairing facilities and equipment.
Working with the principal and building staff.
Responding effectively to student, staff and community needs.
Providing excellent customer service.
Using problem solving techniques.
Demonstrating effective written and oral communication skills.
Maintaining accurate/current records.
Excellent organizational skills.
Helping, taking instructions, and exchanging information.

Preferred qualifications include:
Training or experience cleaning and maintaining a commercial facility desired
Minnesota State Boiler Specialist license preferred.
