Adult Basic Education (ABE) Teacher: ABE and EL instructor

Osseo Area Schools Adult Basic Education (ABE) is looking for a teacher to provide instruction in its program starting for the fall of 2023.  Our school serves nearly 1,000 students age 17 and older each year.  Our students come from over 60 countries and speak nearly 50 languages.  95% of our students self-identify as a person of color.  We are a student-centered program, with classes in core content areas as well as technology and workplace skills.  We are located in the heart of Brooklyn Center, MN, at the Northwest Family Service Center, and collaborate with our social services building partners to provide support to our learners to be successful in class as well as in the community.

Job Summary:
To inspire and prepare each and every scholar with the confidence, courage, and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning. Provide instruction and support in the curriculum areas for which employed; make appropriate and equitable use of instructional resources and technologies; implement the goals and objectives of the district, school and/or program for which employed; maintain contact and communication with guardians/caregivers of scholars, working with them in the development of their scholar; design, deliver, and assess curriculum according to district guidelines; provide in-person, synchronous and asynchronous learning when applicable and work collaboratively with others. Willing to participate in district and building leadership activities.

The teacher in this position will teach a class of up to 20 adults Monday-Thursday mornings from 9:00 am-1:00 pm  and Monday and Wednesday evening from 5:30-8:30 pm as our Level C Academics and Math One and Two (day) and  EL Level D (evening) Instructor. Teachers in our program receive 30 minutes of prep and non-contact time for every hour of direct instruction to attend meetings, prepare for class, and complete other professional duties.

Our Level C Academics classes include instruction in  core academic content areas aligned to level B and C of the College and Career Readiness Standards (http://mnabe.org/abe-content-standards/ccrs) for adult education.  Math One and Two is foundational math instruction (Level A math standards) and our EL Level D instruction is Level C standard content in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Equity Specialist (2 Positions)

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Excellence in Equity Coordinator, the Equity Specialist enhances student learning by using research-based practices to support students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other school staff to center racial equity and cultural relevancy into student engagement, parent engagement, and staff development. Furthermore, to build and maintain supportive relationships that strengthen student and family connections to school and support the elimination of racial disparities, racial isolation, and to achieve equitable student achievement.
Responsibilities and tasks include:

  • Utilize restorative practices to engage students and families in research-based programing that centers racial equity and cultural relevancy.
  • Partner with district departments to support implementation and modeling SEL curriculum; and provide staff development that centers racial equity and cultural relevancy.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, human services teams, behavioral intervention teams and other school staff to identify and connect with students who need additional support.
  • Manage schedules and case load for numerous schools while maintaining professional communication and modeling equity within the district.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to establish learning partnerships through youth and parent programming.
  • Collaborate with school administrator, human services team, and community resources to identify and provide appropriate services for families that transform their schooling experience for equitable results.
  • Support scholars and families engage their cultural capital to experience schooling in a transformative way.
  • Provide outreach services to encourage the involvement of families in transforming the system to ensure equitable student achievement for all
  • Support classroom teachers by preparing site Equity Teams to engage in educational transformation that results in equitable student achievement and culturally relevant learning environments.
  • Manage data and develop reports; and communicate and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Lead and learn for racial equity and cultural relevancy in system departments and committees in order to engage in system equity transformation.

Equity Specialist – American Indian Education

Job Summary: Under the direction of Coordinator of Indian Education, the Indian Education Equity Specialist enhances student learning by helping students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other school staff to center racial equity and cultural relevancy into student engagement, parent engagement, community engagement, and staff development. Furthermore, to build and maintain supportive relationships that strengthen student and family connections to school and support the elimination of racial disparities, racial isolation, and to achieve equitable student achievement.

Responsibilities and tasks include:

The primary role of the Equity Specialist is to engage students and families in programming that centers racial equity and cultural relevancy. An additional role is to provide staff development that centers racial equity and cultural relevancy. Duties include collaborating with teachers and other school staff to establish learning partnerships through youth and parent programming; collaborating with school administrators, teachers, human services teams, and other school staff to identify and connect with students who are in need of additional support; liaising and collaborating with school administrator, human services team, and community resources to identify and provide appropriate services for families that transform their schooling experience for equitable results; helping students and families engage their cultural capital to experience schooling in a transformative way; providing outreach services to encourage the involvement of families in transforming the system to ensure equitable student achievement for all; supporting classroom teachers by preparing site Equity Teams to engage in educational transformation that results in equitable student achievement and culturally relevant learning environments; managing data and developing report information; and communicating and collaborating with stakeholders. The American Indian Education Equity Specialist will provide guidance, leadership and support to schools and departments in the form of professional development, coaching, and other duties as assigned. Assistance provided to schools and district staff will align with the core beliefs of the American Indian education department that include the following:  Supporting and strengthening increased educational outcomes for American Indian students by promoting culturally responsive instruction, curriculum development, and assessment; family and student engagement; and partnerships with departments, schools and the broader community.

American Indian Education empowers American Indian students and their families and enhances their potential through culture-based educational programming. The program reflects key values of families and staff:

Importance of education; and
Importance of American Indian culture and heritage.

We are seeking candidates who possess demonstrated leadership skills within a school/district environment; have experience working with American Indian students and families; and be able to demonstrate experience in designing, implementing, and collaborating when providing adult training opportunities and professional development using Indigenous pedagogy and MN state standards. Qualified candidates should advocate for student learning, convey innovative ideas to teachers and school teams, provide strong interpersonal communication skills, utilize problem solving skills effectively, and guide teams towards equitable, evidence based instructional and culturally responsive practices.

Community Liaison

Job Summary:   Under the direction of the Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, the Community Liaison enhances student learning by helping students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other school staff to center racial equity and cultural relevancy into student engagement, parent engagement, community engagement, and staff development. Furthermore, to build and maintain supportive relationships that strengthen student and family connections to school and support the elimination of racial disparities, racial isolation, and to achieve equitable student achievement.

Responsibilities and tasks include:

  • Providing an ongoing marketing and promotion plan and public information program aimed at continuously informing internal and external stakeholders about Family and Community Engagement programs and services.
  • Managing and compiling data regarding Family and Community Engagement outreach activities; developing recommendations for program goals and improvement; assisting in preparation of periodic reports.
    Scheduling, planning and conducting meetings with stakeholders for the purpose of coordinating program activities and initiatives.
  • Identifying and interfacing with local community resources and agencies that work closely with bipoc communities.
  • Building connections with the diverse communities and assisting families with participation in Family and Community Engagement programs.
  • Developing relationships between the School District, Family and Community Engagement department, and community resources.
  • Planning, developing and implementing informational literature, brochures, television, radio, and website information to develop family and community awareness about Family and Community Engagement initiatives.
  • Maintaining a planned and systematic program of communications and accountability aimed at continuously informing external and internal stakeholders of Family and Community Engagement plans and activities.
  • Working cooperatively with and collaborating with various community and school agencies, parental and neighborhood groups in the development of Family and Community Engagement outreach initiatives.
  • Maintain liaison with district, state, and community committees and representatives in the development and implementation of Family and Community Engagement outreach projects and initiatives.
  • Assist site administrators in providing a climate that supports and welcomes students and families to the School District and helps to raise the awareness level of the district as a whole and Family and Community Engagement services.

English Language Arts Teacher- HS

Must hold a valid secondary teaching license in the State of Minnesota- 9 – 12 Communication Arts/Literature. Preference with English 10 and American Literature Composition.

Elementary Teacher – STEM Specialist

Minimum Requirements:

Must have a valid MN Elementary Education teaching license, Science licensure or emphasis is preferred, or able to obtain the appropriate license from PELSB, Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board.

Qualifications:

  • Must exhibit strong STEM knowledge and experience with teaching elementary STEM
  • Must have a passion for outdoor education, knowledge of flora and fauna,  and be willing to teach outdoors during all the seasons
  • Must have knowledge of technology including coding, robotics, and use of SEESAW
  • Must have strong planning, organization, and collaboration skills with a desire to create innovative STEM opportunities for students
  • Previous experience with science at the elementary level preferred
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to build relationships with students, colleagues, and community
    Excellent communication skills with students, parents and staff

Responsibilities:

  • Identify the needs of students through formal and informal assessments
  • Plan, develop and implement appropriate lessons to ensure the achievement of student growth
  • Communicate with students, parents and staff on regular basis on student progress
