The Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our Food Services Team. A Cooks Helper performs semiskilled work preparing, cooking and serving breakfast and lunch foods, cleaning kitchen and utensils, maintaining records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Head Cook/ and District Food Service Manager

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepares, cooks and serves items in accordance with the menu; sets up a la carte items and serves as a cashier; counts and records monies received.
  • Operates dishwasher, mixer, chopper, slicer, steamers, deep fryers, ovens, and other foodservice and mechanical equipment.
  • Serves students in a manner that promotes a safe, supportive, culturally responsive, equitable, and welcoming learning environment.
  • Assists with preparing, cooking, and serving breakfast and lunch foods.
  • Preps lunch items for the head cook, preps and stocks salad, deli, beverage machines, and condiment cart; prepares and serves sandwiches made to order.
  • Cleans kitchen and equipment, washes and puts away dishes and utensils; washes, folds, and stores laundry; performs general cleaning chores.
  • Replenishes food, beverage, and utensil supplies during meal service periods and assures portions served are consistent.
  • Creates a welcoming environment for students and positively interacts with all students and staff.

Pay and Benefits: Competitive Pay and Benefits based on the contract

COMPENSATION: $16.54-18.90/hour, DOE
*Additional Certifications obtained receive additional payment per hour:
Level 1 – $0.90/per hour
Level 2 – $1.30/per hour
Level 3 – $1.60/per hour
Level 4 – $1.90/per hour

Job Requirements:
Valid driver’s license, Previous experience in school foodservice or catering preferred Required Supervisory Experience: ServSafe Food Safety Certification may be obtained within one (1) year of hire. School Nutrition Association Certification may be obtained within one (1) year of hire.

Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, walking, squatting/kneeling, climbing, balancing, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, hearing, and seeing.

Working Condition:
Spends most time indoors with possible exposure to extreme heat when working with cooking equipment. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels.

Licensed School Nurse

The Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our Secondary team as a Licensed School Nurse (LSN).  The (LSN) is responsible for managing daily student intake & basic health assessments, assisting students with routine health care procedures and screenings, providing first aid and care to students, medication administration, data entry & health information maintenance. The (LSN) provides preventive health services to facilitate the student’s optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provides first aid and health care to students according to district policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Maintains and reviews student health records, emergency cards, immunization records, and reports of physical examinations.
  • Manages student medication and treatment intake process and administration per physician’s orders and parent authorizations.
  • Maintains a system for providing first aid and emergency care in the health office and throughout the school.
  • Identifies health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.
  • Makes health referrals as needed.
  • Communicates current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents/guardians and appropriate school staff.
  • Develops individual health plans (IHP) and Emergency Care Plans, with specific goals, objectives, and interventions based on student health needs.
  • Provides health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
  • Assists students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
  • Provides educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self-care skills to deal with health problems.
  • Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating school health procedures, policies, and programs for the school population, in cooperation with school personnel and community resources.
  • Participates in identifying and reporting environmental health and safety hazards (current and potential) for students.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases and manages reporting process for assigned building.
  • Supervises work of non-licensed personnel in the health office.
  • Delegates procedures to non-licensed personnel, ensure adequate training in these procedures and continues to monitor their performance.
  • Follows the school policy regarding immunization requirements and assists students in meeting compliance.
  • Participate in Child Find team.
  • Participates in the IEP plan development and evaluation process.
  • Collaborates with appropriate staff to efficiently and effectively assess and report possible child abuse, neglect, and/or sexual abuse.
  • Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.

  • Manage the cleanliness of the office space and organization and upkeep of supplies.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists students with instructional and non-instructional activities such as classroom assignments and participation, remaining engaged, toileting, feeding, dressing, mobility, etc.
  • Establishes positive relationships with students and acts as a role model for appropriate social skills and behaviors in all situations.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.

  • Plans supervise and coordinates daily food service operations to comply with federal, state, and district regulations and policies.
  • Assists in planning menus and ensures that food items are served in quantities according to good dietary principles.
  • Determines the quantities of each food to be prepared.
  • Assists in recipe and menu cycle development and maintenance.
  • Plans, assigns, and directs daily work, ensures training of staff.
  • Assists supervisor in evaluating performance provides input into the performance appraisal.

  • Trains, supports, and supervises staff in the use of systems and standard operating procedures and safe use of all mechanical equipment.
  • Understands and communicates on a daily basis to deliver information to the food service staff and school populations about the wellness policy, meals, sources of food, recipes, and overall food nutrition goals.
  • Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, implements departmental plans, work programs, processes, procedures, and policies required to achieve overall department performance results.
  • Assists with orders received accounts for, and stocks food and supplies; maintains inventory.
  • Cleans and sanitizes work surfaces and areas, equipment, and tables.
  • Monitors and records temperature on coolers, freezers, refrigerators, dry storage, and serving lines.
  • Prepares, cooks and serves main entrees and alternate foods.
  • Ensures Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan is properly implemented and followed.
  • Oversees and coordinates the maintenance of equipment, utensils, and working areas.
  • Handles kitchen and cafeteria emergencies including equipment failure, repair and service calls, etc.; documents issues and corrective action is taken.
  • Reports accidents and/or issues occurring in the kitchen or cafeteria.
  • Updates employees regarding food and nutrition services operational changes.
  • Meets and communicates with Licensed School Nurse regarding children with special dietary needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and, Abilities Preferred: 

  • Thorough knowledge of the preparation, cooking, and serving of food in large quantities
  • Thorough knowledge of food quality and values and of nutritional and economical substitutions within food groups
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices used in ordering, receiving, and storing food in large quantities
  • Thorough knowledge of kitchen sanitation and safety measures used in food handling and in the operation, cleaning, and care of utensils, equipment, and work areas

Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/ Training:

  • Previous experience in school foodservice or catering preferred

  • ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification may be obtained within one (1) month of hire

Job Summary: 21st Century Program at Brooklyn Center Community Schools has vacancies for Out of School Time (OST)Program Staff to provide program support to students after school, leading program clubs and student supervision.  The OST Program Staff will be responsible for supporting the 21st Century Out-of-School Time OST programs. Under the direction of the Youth Programs Coordinator, this key position will assist in building a community of success through increasing the quality of OST programs and student leadership opportunities. The OST  Program Staff will deliver high-quality OST programming to students while supporting their wellbeing, collaborate with community partners, and ensure daily program needs are met.
Knowledge, Skills and, Abilities Preferred:

  • Ability to positively interact with youth and support their development
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations and urban school settings preferred
  • Previous experience with and understanding of out-of-school time youth programs

  • Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable.
  • Has the organizational skills which go along with coaching students in an educational setting (rosters, schedules, practices, communication, equipment inventory, etc.)

Working Conditions and Physical Efforts: All duties within this position requires physical strength and ability. Duties are normally performed in a school environment or outdoors. There may be extended periods working outdoors in extreme temperatures. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; run; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
