Special Education Teacher- Extended School Year and Summer Programming

The Brooklyn Center Community Schools (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our team as a Special Education Teacher- Extended School Year and Summer Programming. We are offering an inclusive summer program that supports students who are eligible for ESY services and students with disabilities who attend general education summer programming. The Special Education Teacher will provide academic, functional, and transition instruction to students during designated ESY times, and will also support students with disabilities within the general education program and activities. Work is performed under the general direction of the onsite administrator. Essential Job Responsibilities: 

· Creates lessons and learning environments that are safe, respectful, and interesting as well as culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate.

· Provides instructional support and services to students in both the special education classroom and in general education classrooms and enrichment activities

· Selects, adapts, and individualizes materials appropriate for diverse student populations and skills.

· Establishes developmentally appropriate instructional and behavioral expectations for students and communicates those to students and their families.

· Assesses students’ developmental, cognitive and social needs and provides developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs.

· Regularly assesses student learning by using multiple forms of assessment.

· Responsible for case management and maintaining appropriate due process files during summer programming.

· Facilitates positive interactions between students and teacher, student and peers, and student and other adults.

· Models learning and behavior consistent with the expectations for students.

· Participates in ongoing and regular staff, team, and individual professional development.

· Collaborates with general education summer program staff to develop, plan and implement best practices based on the needs/abilities of the students.

· Keeps the students’ needs and rights first and foremost in any educational decision-making.

· Collaborates and communicates regularly with families in making educational decisions and uses family and community resources to support learning.

· Supervise students to ensure a safe, supportive, culturally responsive, equitable, and welcoming learning environment Instruct students in the area(s) of specialization and subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

· Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.

· Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions.

· Assesses, identifies, and evaluates the needs of students; provides instruction in individual or group sessions; establishes and maintains standards of behavior.

· Creates and implements behavior modification programs for special needs students.

· Encourages students to think independently, develop and express original ideas.

· Evaluates student progress; maintains appropriate records; prepares progress reports.

· Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials.

· Attends meetings and training sessions as required.

· Other duties as assigned.

Pay and Benefits: Pay and Benefits based on the contract
Duty Days: Monday-Thursday June 20 – July 28. No school on July 4th.

Program Hours for students (see below for SEA hours):
ECSE: 8:30-10:30
Elementary: 8:00-2:00
Secondary: 9:00-1:30

*Total Teacher paid hours are variable! Total Teacher work hours include student contact time listed above, in addition to before and after program time supporting breakfast, dismissal, and teacher collaboration. This additional time will add up to approximately 1-2 hours each day depending on the program and students. Additionally, based on enrollment and student needs, Teachers will have the option of working between 4 and 7.5 hours per day. We will try to accommodate all preferences in workday hours, but cannot guarantee the first choice.

Qualifications:

· Experience working as an educational or teacher’s assistant, paraprofessional, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Minnesota Paraprofessional Certification or Minnesota Educational Assistant Certificate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred: 

· Thorough knowledge of the English language structure and content, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

· General knowledge of curriculum and training design principles and methods.

· General knowledge of teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

· Experience in the use of computers and other technology equipment.

· Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively, both orally and in written form.

· Ability to understand and follow instructions precisely.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, officials, associates, families, and the general public.

 

Physical Requirements: Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and exposure to bodily fluids; may be required to wear a mask and other personal protective equipment in a pandemic outbreak; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic).

Health Service Assistant

Description:

The Brooklyn Center Community Schools (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our Health Team as a Health Service Assistant for the summer school program. The Health Services Assistant completes daily student health office intake, providing basic assessments, first aid, care, medication administration, data entry, and health information maintenance. Under the supervision of the Licensed School Nurse (LSN), performs nursing duties within the bounds of his/ her licensure. Essential Job Responsibilities: 

· Provides first aid and health care to students according to district policies, guidelines, and procedures.

· Makes observations about a student’s health status and makes a referral to the LSN per district guidelines or when further assessment is needed.

· Implements health care plan/emergency care plan for each student examined if an emergency condition is present.

· Administers medications to students according to school district policies, guidelines and procedures, and as delegated by the LSN.

· Performs various screenings and tests (vision, hearing, height, and weight) for students according to Minnesota Department of Health guidelines.

· Provides specialized health care procedures, as delegated by the LSN.

· Collects, maintains, and manages student immunization information according to state immunization laws.

· Works with parents/guardians & healthcare providers to ensure progress in maintaining compliance.

· Maintains student visit and care logs, incident/accident reports, and medication administration logs.

· Maintains student health records and emergency contact information.

· Monitors and documents incidents of communicable diseases, in collaboration with the LSN, and according to district policies and guidelines.

· Provides clerical services to the Health Office – filing, copying, distributing materials, answering and monitoring phones, monitoring email.

· Maintains Health Office cleanliness; ensures that adequate and proper supplies are available.

· Contacts parents/guardians according to school district protocols.

· Make follow-up contacts with parents when important health information has been sent home.

· Creates a positive relationship with students, staff, and families and ensures efficient and satisfying interaction experiences.

· Processes, calculates, enters, and edits data entry of third-party billing for nursing services.

· Other duties as assigned.

Duty Days: Monday-Thursday | June 20th- July 28th
Qualifications: Associates degree or 60 college-level courses with emphasis in health, child development, education, or related field
License/ Certification: Practical Nurse License or Registered Nurse license preferred. CPR/AED and First Aid Certification may be obtained within six (6) months of hire. Trained in vision and hearing screening or able to be trained within six (6) months of hire.

Essential Knowledge and Specialized Subject Knowledge Required to Perform the Essential Functions of the Job:

· Basic knowledge of the physical, social, and emotional needs of students

· Basic knowledge and skills of first aid and CPR

· Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the administration of medications

· Knowledge in using computer technology to keep records
