Dean of Students

JOB GOAL:
The Dean of Students serves as a member of the school administrative team and assists with the daily operation of the school, specifically in the areas of attendance, behavioral, and disciplinary prevention and intervention services with an emphasis on Restorative Justice and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The Dean also provides leadership and serves as a resource for instructional and systemic equity at the middle school while embracing an inclusive philosophy.

ESSENTIAL STRENGTHS:
1. Understands adolescent development, and works effectively with a wide range of students (age, backgrounds, behaviors).
2. Strong understanding of Restorative practices, including experience with coaching of certified staff.
3. Knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focus on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior.
4. Communicates effectively with students, parents and staff members.
5. Exhibits versatility and sound judgment in dealing with people in a variety of settings and has strong organizational skills.
6. Demonstrates effective use of communication technology in the normal course of work.
7. Always acts in a manner that displays integrity and that serves students, staff members, the administrative team, parents and the community.
8. Collaborates effectively with all members of the school community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Student Attendance
1. Uses proactive measures to communicate the importance of attendance as a direct connection to student achievement. Involves parents, guardians, teachers, building administrators and community agencies in promoting regular attendance.
2. Takes appropriate action regarding student absence, tardiness and truancy as defined by district policies.
3. Keeps accurate records regarding student absence, tardiness and truancy.
4. Works directly with associate principals in handling habitual truancy issues.

Student Management
1. Assumes shared responsibility for implementation of all school district policies, rules and regulations concerning student behavior, including teaching building and classroom expectations.
2. Participates collaboratively with teachers, counselors and building administrators (and students and parents, where appropriate) in developing individual students alternatives for behavior improvement.
a. Assist staff in: defining and measuring behavior; understanding principles of reinforcement; teaching new behavior; implementing strategies for weakening behavior; and identifying antecedents.
b. Work with individual teachers, groups of teachers and/or the entire staff on areas such as: crisis intervention, learning and collaboration issues, and factors that can affect the development and implementation of interventions.
3. Works collaboratively with School Resource Officer to take appropriate action regarding student misconduct and violation of school rules.
4. Assumes active involvement with the building administrators in all major school and district student behavior concerns, including alcohol and other drug abuse problems.
5. Assumes responsibility for lunchroom and recess supervision, including accessing building administration and supervising paraprofessionals hired for student supervision duties.
6. Assumes shared responsibility with the building administrators for student supervision before, during and after school hours (Note: this will include evening supervision responsibilities, as assigned).
7. Assumes responsibility for transit supervision of students including overseeing am/pm crossing guards and bus duty personnel.
8. Assumes lead in collaborating and communicating with the district transportation director and the contracted bus company.
9. Participates in the recommendation, evaluation and assignment of students to special/alternative programs for education.

Other Performance Responsibilities
1. Supervises and evaluates support staff.
2. Collaborates with associate principal (and other building administrators) on building safety coordination.
3. Collaborates with associate principal (and other building administrators) on student leadership development.
4. Communicates with all stakeholders effectively, respectfully, and in a timely manner through oral, written, and electronic means.
5. Completes tasks on time.
6. Attends work regularly.
7. Performs other related duties, as assigned by the associate principal or building principal.
