School Counselor

JOB GOAL:
The School Counseling Program will coordinate the efforts of all curriculum areas to enhance student academic learning, personal/social development and career/vocational awareness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Service to Students
1. Provides orientation for parents and students transferring from within or without the district.
2. Cooperates with other district personnel to provide effective program planning for students moving from one building to another.
3. Screens all new students for appropriate educational placement.
4. Assists with new student transition through group or individual counseling.
5. Communicates with other schools and outside agencies regarding student concerns.

Guidance and Counseling
1. Provides activities of a developmental nature in every classroom on a regularly scheduled cycle.
2. Provides small group counseling which is developmental and preventative in nature.
3. Works with students on an individual/small group counseling basis regarding personal problems in developmental and academic areas.
4. Provides assistance/counseling to parents and school district staff as appropriate.
5. Consults with parents, school district staff and representatives of outside agencies, with respect to specific needs of individual students.
6. Conducts conferences with school personnel, to exchange ideas and information which will increase staff effectiveness in working with individual students.
7. Recommends and/or implements behavioral change strategies with individuals or groups of students.
8. Participates in Student Support teams.
9. Receives and disseminates appropriate information regarding special written reports concerning students.
10. Provides regular communication to parents through avenues such as parent clubs or newsletters.
11. Assists principal with special building concerns.

Coordination of Programs
1. Coordinates the administration of and assists with the interpretation of the elementary portion of the district-wide testing program.
2. Participates in and interprets results from the district-wide kindergarten screening.
3. Provides activities in the area of careers for the developmental guidance program.
4. Assists students with decision-making skills.
5. Maintains security and confidentiality of student records in the building and in the transfer to other educational settings.
6. Participates in the Student Support Team and Multi-disciplinary Team processes; acts as contact person for Student Support Team meetings.
7. Assists principal and other school personnel with student placement and other scheduling preparations.
8. Participates in curriculum development, revision and implementation.
9. Participates in guidance program development, maintenance, and evaluation.
10. Maintains and updates a list of community resources (e.g. Family Resource Directory).

Interpersonal Relationships
1. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with students.
2. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with educational staff.
3. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with parents and other significant people.

Professional Responsibilities
1. Attends conferences and meetings to keep updated in areas of responsibility.
2. Participates in various community, county and state activities when available and appropriate.
3. Maintains associations with local and state organizations .
4. Promotes and provides conditions of confidentiality that relate to privileged information.
5. Follows the policies and procedures of the school district.
6. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility.
7. Assumes agreed upon professionally appropriate responsibilities as they relate to the school.
8. Communicates effectively with all stakeholders.
9. Attends work regularly.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Director of Student Services.

High School Principal

Mahtomedi Public Schools is currently seeking a highly qualified, experienced instructional leader who has optimal skills to develop and lead a team of individuals to deliver an excellent educational experience for all students.  This position collaborates with a team of six other principals and an administrative team in the District.

Mahtomedi Schools hosts a 3,300 student population and is located in the northeast metropolitan area; comprised of an E-2 Elementary, 3-5 Elementary, Middle School grades 6-8, High School grades 9-12 along with a Transition program for students aged 18-21.  The High School serves approximately 1200 students and 100 staff.

DESCRIPTION: The principal provides direction, coordination and leadership of the educational, administrative and public relations programs and activities of the school, in a manner consistent with the district’s vision, mission and beliefs.

  • Lead staff in the implementation of the District’s strategic plan at the building level
  • Develop and complete mutual commitments aligned with the District’s strategic plan
  • Participate on the District’s administrative team and actively participate in the development, implementation, and achievement of the District’s goals
  • Communicate proactively with parents, community members, and parent organizations concerning school programs and activities
  • Oversee the development of and implementation of student discipline/restorative practices and student celebration programs
  • Implement state and federal regulations and School Board policies related to the health and safety of all students and employees

Plan, administer and regularly evaluate the high school system, including but not limited to:

  • collaboration with Teaching & Learning on the accountability for instructional programming and provides appropriate professional development opportunities for staff
  • selection and development/coaching of all licensed and support staff
  • oversee student services
  • facilities management
  • extra-curricular programming including activities and athletics
  • compliance with established policies and regulations and effective allocation of budget resources to ensure successful operation of the school
