1.0 FTE – Multi-Categorical Teacher – Centerville Elementary – Grades K-5 – Beginning as soon as possible through at least December, 2019.

The SouthWest Metro Intermediate District 288 is seeking a Director of Special Services to coordinate Special Education programs and staff located at several sites throughout the District.  This position would include designing and implementing effective programs for students requiring a full day of specialized instruction.   The individual must possess effective communication skills and knowledge of special education due process laws and procedures as well as someone who is able to collaborate and problem solve.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Special Services oversees all alternative education, special education, health
services, and social service programs within the cooperative, supporting the academic achievement of students in a
manner that aligns with its mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
Typical Duties Performed
20 % General Administration and Management
? Advises Director on overall direction of Division of Special Education Services;
? Provides administrative leadership and management oversight of department;
? Conducts meetings and participates in local, regional, and state meetings as necessary;
? Present information items at Administration Meetings and Board Meetings as needed;
? Collaborate with member district administration;

30 % Coordinate Hiring of Staff, Provide Supervision and Staff Development
? Supervise licensed staff, and paraprofessionals in program area of responsibility;
? Oversee the hiring and evaluation of staff members in the areas of alternative education and social services;
? Provides leadership to members in the area of special education;
? Upon request, attend or facilitate IEP/IFSP meetings or other information sharing meetings;

20% Coordinate Appropriate Student Services
? Plans, develops, implements, and administers programs and services to meet identified needs, including development and implementation of new programs and services;
? Participate in the determination of program plans and curriculum requirements for students with disabilities, including developing program goals and objectives that align with the Districts mission and gather and analyze info and data to evaluate programs;
? Prepare requests for new, improved or expanded special education programs;
? Supervise implementation of educational programs for students with disabilities, assuring that each student is provided with a free and appropriate public education;
? Conduct an in-take process for new students;
? Appoint case managers for newly referred students;

20% Provide Legal Compliance and Monitoring
? Monitor and provide technical assistance as needed concerning the IEP/IFSP, due process procedures, and compliance with State and Federal Rules;
? Ensure that all federal, state, and local reporting requirements on special education programs are met;
? Assist the Director in maintaining and completion or mandated reports, and records, state reports and compliance indicators;

10% Other
? Maintain contact with member district administrators, state consultants in special education, directors of outside agencies and school programs, and work with outside professional service providers and college personnel on matters of mutual interest;
? Interacts with parents and advocates of students for the purpose of implementing services addressing the unique needs of each qualifying student;
? Have or develop an understanding of conciliation, mediation; and collaboration with external providers such as advocates.

EDUCATION, TRANING AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Qualifications – Minnesota license for Director of Special Education or eligibility for such licensure; 3 years or more educational administration experience preferred

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: Master’s Degree in Special Education and certification in Special Education; or; Bachelor’s Degree and certification in Special Education; 1 to 2 years of successful classroom teaching experience in non-traditional school setting as a special education teacher; 2 or more years of teaching experience preferred.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Professional employee work year. Terms and conditions of employment shall be consistent with the SWMetro Intermediate District #288 Administrator’s Agreement.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of SWMetro Intermediate District #288 District Administrator’s Agreement.
