District Highlights: The district lives out its mission A source of community strength and pride, the Virginia Public Schools work in partnership with families and the local community to educate and engage our students and prepare them to be productive and responsible citizens. *Nearly 300 employees *Student/ Teacher ratio is currently 16:1 *67% of the teachers have been in the district for more than 10 years *Enrollment has increased 7% over the past decade *More students open enroll to the district than leave (572 to 257) *84% of the students are Caucasian, 8 % American Indian, 5 % Black, 3% Hispanic, and 1% Asian *40% students who are on free/reduced lunch program *State MCA test scores exceeded the state average at all grade levels in each subject area reading, math, science *Graduation rate is 92.6% in 2014, exceeding the state average *68% of seniors and 37% of juniors participate in College Readiness programs such as concurrent courses at the high school and Post-Secondary Options (PSEO) at Mesabi Community College *89% of graduates are enrolled in a public Institution of higher Education (IHE) after graduation, exceeds state average *Most of these graduates earn at least one year of credits within 2 years of enrollment, above the state average *The district offers 15 different sports and 28 clubs and other extra-curricular activities *One-third of students participate in at least one of these activities *Strong athletics and fine arts programs *Strong strategic plan and vision for the district *Organizational values of respect, the whole child, highest quality, community engagement, and stewardship Communities Served: Virginia is located in beautiful Northeastern Minnesota on the Historic Mesabi Iron Range. It serves a geographic area covering 157 square miles including the City of Virginia; part of the City of Mountain Iron; townships of Pike, Sandy, and Wuori; and unorganized rural areas near Sand Lake. Area district population is 11,614.
