Physical Education/Health Teacher

Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students’ awareness and understanding of physiology, health and nutrition, biological functions, and the importance of hygiene and exercise to physical and mental well-being; and to motivate students to work towards good health.

Essential FunctionsDevelops and administers Phy Ed/Health Education classes consistent with school district goals and objectives.
Teaches knowledge and understanding of physiology, health and nutrition, physiology, anatomy, and biological functions.
Develops students’ concepts in nutrition, food groups, diet, caloric intake, vitamins, and related topics.
Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school’s standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of current phy ed/health education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education.
Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being.
Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
Ability to organize and coordinate work.
Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License:Minnesota State Certification as a Physical Education and Health Education Teacher
Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
EducationBachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Position Summary:
The Worthington School District 518 is seeking a Peer Coach that supports teachers in growth and development through instructional improvement strategies. This position resides within the Department of Teaching and Learning, which serves the district grades K-12.

Position Requirements: Must hold a valid Minnesota Teaching License
Minimum of five (5) years classroom teaching experience
Graduate work in an education related field preferred but not required
Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with others including teachers, administrators, and other district employees
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Have a solid understanding of “best educational practices”
Ability to facilitate groups of people working toward a common goal
Demonstrated expertise in strategies for differentiating classroom instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students
Communicates effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills
Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with teams
Position Responsibilities:Serve as a peer coach in the district, working with teachers and administrators to improve instructional efforts in the buildings.
Conduct (non-administrative) teacher observations as a part of the district developed teacher evaluation process.
Assist teachers in the development and implementation of goals and action plans that incorporate best practices in teaching and learning as well as differentiated instructional strategies.
Share research based strategies and instructional approaches with teachers in appropriate content areas.
Model and demonstrate effective instructional strategies for teachers.
Provide pedagogical support for classroom teachers.
Remain current with educational research and participate in staff development relative to current research in the field to deepen understanding of effective practices in instruction.
Maintains and works to grow online professional development district-wide.
Serves as a team member within the Department of Teaching and Learning and carry out departmental responsibilities (attend office meetings, submit newsletter articles, etc.)
Attendance is an essential function of this position.
Perform other non-administrative duties as assigned.
This position reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning.
