Instructional Coach (1.0)

Building:  Maplewood Middle School
Accountable To: Principal
Salary and Benefits: Per Teacher Master Agreement
Grade: K-8

Primary Objective:    The building Instructional Coach is a highly qualified teacher with significant skills in coaching teachers in the development of instructional practice.  The Instructional Coach will work closely with the building principals creating individual professional development plans to support teachers.

Qualifications:

1. Must possess a MN teaching license
2. Minimum three years of directly related teaching experience
3. Strong working knowledge of the Minnesota Academic Standards
4. Experience with curriculum development and implementation
5. Willingness to work with and instructionally coach all classroom teachers, K-8
6. Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and current researched best practices and strategies
7. Effective communication skills, both oral and written
8. Strong intercultural competence
9. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse community, district staff members, parents and the public

Desired Qualifications:

1. Advanced degree or certification in educational leadership, professional development, or instructional coaching
2. Experience working at multiple grade levels
3. Comfortable with collecting and interpreting data
4. Prior successful experience in an urban setting working with a diverse student population is highly desirable

Major Areas of Accountability:

1. Work with administrative staff to develop, coordinate, and deliver professional growth activities in content and program areas.
2. Provide one-on-one teacher assistance in content and program areas.
3. Provide focused, sustained training that assists teachers in meeting data-driven, collaboratively determined instructional goals in content and program areas.
4. Interface with all appropriate departments and personnel to ensure program coordination, implementation in content and program areas and student success.
5. Participate in professional development as required to perform and improve required skills in content and program areas.
6. Participate in curriculum development and revisions in content and program areas.
7. Assist teachers in obtaining instructional materials for curriculum development and implementation.
8. Serve on the MTSS team and support instructional intervention team.
9. Collaborate with grade-level and intervention teams regarding interventions.
10. Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.

Middle School Principal – Cottage Grove Middle School

DISTRICT INFORMATION:

The South Washington County School district includes four St. Paul suburbs of Cottage Grove, Newport, St. Paul Park and Woodbury as well as portions of three other communities.  Our district includes approximately 100,000 residents with 19,000 students enrolled in our schools. We have sixteen (K-5) elementary schools, four (6-8) middle schools, three (9-12) high schools and an alternative high school.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Perform instructional leadership and management of the educational program to maximize student learning under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent.   Manage, evaluate and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, goals and strategic plan of the school district.  This includes instructional programs, co-curricular activities, and student management systems to ensure a safe and orderly climate, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations and emergency procedures.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Serve as a building instructional leader.
  2. Create and maintain a school culture focused on learning and continuous improvement.
  3. Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and personal responsibility.
  4. Develop and administer annual master schedule for instructional programs, ensuring sequential learning experiences for all students.
  5. Continually monitor student progress and outcomes.  Work with staff to improve student learning and achievement.
  6. Establish and maintain effective communication and public relations with staff, students, parents and community members through all programs and activities.
  7. Prepare and manage budget for the building, maintain accurate budgetary records as required by district policies and procedures.
  8. Establish a high performing staff through effective hiring and evaluation systems.  Develop, coach, train, mentor and manage staff as appropriate.
  9. Manage, evaluate and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, goals and strategic plan of the school district including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations and emergency procedures.
  10. Ensure compliance with all laws, school board policies and school district procedures.
  11. Supervise the instructional programs of the school on a regular basis to ensure the use of effective instructional strategies, content and materials consistent with research on learning, student growth and development.
  12. Work with staff to identify professional needs and plan, organize, and facilitate programs that improve staff effectiveness.
  13. Ensure a safe, orderly environment that encourages staff and students to take responsibility for behavior and creates high morale among staff and students.
  14. Establish a professional rapport with students and staff. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents and school personnel. Serve as a role model.
  15. Participate in professional development workshops, activities and seminars.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
