Manufacturing/Construction Careers Teacher

Full time (1.0 FTE) Manufacturing or Construction Careers teaching position available beginning the 2024-25 school year at the Forest Lake Area School District.

Forest Lake Area Schools is seeking a Manufacturing or Construction Careers teacher for the upcoming school year. The program serves students in grades 7-12 at the Middle School, High School, and Community School.  The candidate should display a general background in the manufacturing or construction trades, such as woodworking, computer/CAD technology used in programming machines and lasers found in the shop facilities, and metal fabrication. Some classes currently scheduled to be taught for the upcoming school year are: architecture, cabinetmaking, electricity/electronics, carpentry, welding & machine tool, and engineering. Significant investment has been made in upgrading equipment in this area. Courses often build furniture, structures, and other useful products that are used/sold in the community.

Essential Functions

  • Provides instruction in the core and age-appropriate curriculum. Assesses initial knowledge or skills. Makes appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies, including computer technology. Develops and implements instructional activities for students. Develops and copies instructional materials; and, orders instructional materials and supplies. Collaborates with other teachers, staff resources, and volunteers regarding instructional and program activities. Provides for remediation, when necessary. Revises teaching methodology to accommodate students. Maintains instructional equipment, as appropriate. Team teaches, when appropriate;
  • Evaluates student performance through examinations, homework assignments, and other methods; promotes student achievement, maintains the required student records; and, submits required reports, including report cards, to the principal or other school administrators. Assesses students’ academic, behavioral and vocational needs. Determines student mastery of subjects. Facilitates District-wide testing of students;
  • Implements the goals, objectives and standards of the District, the school, and the specific program or department. Follows a prescribed course of study as delineated in curriculum outlines and authorized by the building principal. Develops, adapts, and updates curriculum. Develops and implements lesson plans;
  • Maintains contact and communications with parents of students, and works with them in the development of each student. Schedules and holds parent conferences, as well as conferences with county workers, as appropriate. Recruits students into classes and specialized programs. Enrolls students and maintains classroom databases on students;
  • Regarding special needs students, in conjunction with special education teachers, determines the least restrictive environment, and assists with the completion of due process reports and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Performs classroom management duties to include restraint of students and enforces school rules governing the conduct of students, and takes appropriate disciplinary action regarding students not adhering to school rules. Ensures the safety of students. Maintains an appropriate classroom learning environment, including displays;
  • Advises students. As appropriate, supervises students involved in internships, and in volunteer and community service projects. Secures training stations and employment for students; assists students with employment forms. Advises students in various District, State and national competitions. Fund raises for certain student activities;
  • Participates in staff development and professional growth activities, as required and as requested. Participates in appropriate in-service activities or educational opportunities to maintain current teacher certifications. Mentors new teachers;

American Sign Language Interpreter

Summary of Scope of Classification

This class is accountable for facilitating communication between deaf/hard of hearing students and others by interpreting in educational settings.  Participates as a member of the educational team serving these students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of;
    • American Sign Language (ASL), Pigeon Sign English (PSE), Spoken English, and Minimal Language Signing modes;
    • child development.
  • Skilled in:
    • ASL;
    • customer service;
    • problem-solving;
    • effective time management and prioritization
  • Considerable ability to:
    • communicate effectively, listening, oral, and written;
    • establish rapport with others and to interact effectively with persons having a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds;
    • handle multiple issues simultaneously;
    • work independently and as an effective team member;
  • Ability to:
    • take a visual language and interpret it into English structural sentences, and the reverse;
    • process signs while simultaneously voice interpreting;
    • Interpret at an educational level and language mode appropriate to each individual;
    • give priority for facilitating communication of deaf/hard of hearing students within a hearing environment in both the spoken word into sign language, and voice interpreting sign language into English;
    • be prompt, responsible and dependable;
    • use computer software applications to accomplish work tasks.

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes current methods of interpreting to best serve deaf/hard of hearing students, staff and deaf parents with their communication needs;
  • Interprets spoken English into sign language for all communication in a school day, such as classroom, lectures, lab or other educational settings where conversations between deaf/hard of hearing students and anyone else are taking place;
  • Takes notes for students in various educational settings.  Prepares lecture notes, ensuring accurate interpretation;
  • Previews videotapes, PowerPoint and other media presentations in preparation for interpreting for deaf/hard of hearing students;
  • Interprets at student orientation sessions, various meetings and activities between students and student groups and staff.  Also interprets at IEP meetings;
  • Meets regularly with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher regarding the progress of individual students.  Works closely with team teachers to ensure that accommodations are made for students;
  • Receives some work direction from licensed staff, including Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher;
  • Attends mentoring sessions with an assigned mentor and/or attends staff development sessions to maintain and upgrade skills;
  • As a member of the educational team, performs other related duties such as tutoring, job coaching, copying materials, driving and other duties necessary to facilitate the students’ education;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • All employees should regard coming to work on time, working as scheduled, and leaving at the end of the workday as an essential function of their job.
