Our Early Learning School is where school starts for our youngest learners and where families begin their learning journey with Wayzata Public Schools. It is the place where children and parents attend class and build relationships with teachers, early childhood experts and other young families. The newly built Early Learning School features indoor and outdoor spaces designed to provide a quality, safe and developmentally appropriate learning experience. Our classes are inclusive and diverse. Our staff do an outstanding job preparing children for kindergarten and collaborating with parents in building a strong foundation for each child’s success.
Position:
The ELS Director provides vision for and direct supervision of the early childhood programs offered through Wayzata Public Schools’ Community Ed and Special Services departments. They work in cooperation with the Teaching & Learning Department to determine and be accountable for appropriate kindergarten readiness objectives and early childhood programs that enrich, expand and support the District’s mission, vision and commitment to personalized learning for each and every student. They oversee the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), School Readiness, preschool, early childhood screening and early childhood special education (ECSE) birth-5 programs. They serve as a member of the Community Ed and Special Services leadership teams and District Leadership Council
Specific Responsibilities
Strategic Vision: Design, implement, and evaluate high quality early childhood programs offered collaboratively between Community Ed and Special Services.
Develop, share and regularly update a vision for the early learning work that reflects shared commitment to improve outcomes for children and close achievement gaps.
Project future needs and participate in planning activities for staffing, facilities, interagency agreements, and staffing to meet ever-changing needs during regular and extended school year.
Collaboration and Relationships: Promote a collaborative environment with students, parents, district, special education and Community Ed staff.
Work with Teaching & Learning and elementary principals to provide seamless student transitions to kindergarten.
Build relationships with families and the community to understand the needs of our youngest learners. Develop and maintain strong relationships with families through a family engagement plan.
Partner in developing and implementing community-wide strategies to serve the early learning needs of each and every preschool child.
Leadership and Supervision: Lead a team of early childhood educators to ensure the highest quality programming for children, excellent customer service and regular communication to families.
Hire, supervise, assign and evaluate all licensed and non-licensed staff in all Early Learning programs.
Provide instructional leadership and facilitate staff development in best practices related to assessment and evaluation, intervention, parent communication, team-building, and related technical skills.
Lead the regular development of early childhood community needs assessments.
Lead the development of curriculum and the implementation of instructional programs. Evaluate programs and services to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies consistent with research on early childhood learning and child growth and development.
Operations:Provide positive leadership in coordination of day to day operations of Early Learning School programs.
Communicate with the Director of Special Services and Community Ed in planning programs and staff development activities, budget development and management, individual student and personnel issues, and ongoing best practices in early childhood education.
Ensure full understanding of current State, Federal and District policies and regulations and assure compliance. Prepare and be accountable for state and local reports with the Community Ed and Special Services Director. Assist in monitoring due process for compliance with state and federal law.
Ability to develop and maintain program budgets. Oversee ECFE, School Readiness, Preschool and Early Childhood Screening budget and finances. Assist with the annual expenditure plan for ECSE budgets and monitor expenditures.
Participate in data processing and information management activities related to required state and federal child count reporting, MARSS, EDRS, Uniform Tuition Billing and preschool programing state reporting.
Facilitate development and implementation of individual program plans for students through use of Individual Family Services Plan (IFSP), Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Individualized Interagency Intervention Plan (IIIP).
Represent and coordinate interagency efforts designed for early identification of children with special needs through child find activities.
Collaborate with district staff regarding special transportation.
Oversee regular meetings with Early Learning School staff. Facilitate and support parent advisory board. Participate in the required Community Ed and Special Services staff meetings and Community Ed other meetings as requested.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervision of all aspects of the Early Learning School and programs.
. Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in early education or related field required.
Master’s or specialist degree or equivalent in special education required.
Minimum of five years of teaching or leadership experience in early childhood education, ECSE and/or ECFE. Experience in the following preferred:Current and best practices for inclusive early childhood education settings and family engagement.
ECFE, School Readiness and Early Childhood screening relevant statutes, rules, policies, finance, and special Education (Part C and B) laws and regulations.
Leadership experience in Community Ed or Special Education and proven competencies in supervision, evaluation, fiscal management and early childhood experience required.
