Elementary Assistant Principal

Description: REPORTS TO: Building Principal WORK YEAR: Full-time; 44 weeks Assist the principal in managing the educational programs, operations, personnel, and financial resources within the building to ensure that district policies are followed, district and state standards are achieved, and the educational needs of all students are met. Job Summary: *Fosters high student achievement and provides learning experiences which help all students meet or exceed the Minnesota high graduation standards. *Maintains a safe and welcoming learning environment where all individuals are respected. *Efficiently and effectively manages to maximize educational resources. *Works with building and district personnel to implement instructional programs that support learning opportunities for all students. *Coordinates the involvement of various building stakeholders–staff, parents/guardians, students–in the development and implementation of policies that enhance opportunities for students. *Conducts classroom observations and evaluates the effectiveness of professional staff. *Develops building policies and procedures dealing with behavior management, substance abuse, special programs, parent/student problems, etc. *Oversees development of the school’s schedule and teaching/class assignments. *Develops and administers the approved building budget. *Makes decisions relating to human resources within the building, including hiring, discipline, training and development, performance appraisal, and related activities. *Is an integral member of the district leadership team, serving on building, district, and community committees. *Develops and directs the preparation of building emergency procedures and responses. *Directs the maintenance and improvement of the school plant, facilities, and equipment. *Monitors the completion of reports, records, and communications required by the District and State. *Assumes all administrative duties in the absence of the Principal and performs other duties as apparent or assigned.

Literacy Coordinator

Description: REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction WORK YEAR: Full-time; 240 days per year (Flexible Scheduling) Job Summary: *Coordinate the overall Pre-K-12 ELA program. Provide direction for program development and oversee design and implementation of new initiatives. *Collaborate with school district administrators, parents, and community agencies (e.g., Reading Center, United Way, Rochester Public Library, and Rotary Club) in coordinating ELA instruction and support to effectively meet the needs of students. *Collaborate with Instructional Coaches Coordinator in leading and supporting instructional coaches and literacy coaches. Collaborate with the American Reading Company in implementing Action 100 and IRLA Lite at participating schools. *Oversee the AmeriCorps program and assist with hiring AmeriCorps members, assigning internal coaches, and placement of members. *Participate on and/or facilitate district committees to support the work of ELA instruction. *Provide staff development for district staff, as well as provide consultation with staff on modifications or directions for appropriate services, assessments, and placements for students. This includes new teacher orientation, curriculum training, best practices workshops, Pre-K staff development, and courses for relicensure. *Serve on the Rochester Public Schools P-3 Leadership Team, and support Pre-K literacy efforts. *Prepare the district’s state literacy plan for the Read Well by Third Grade initiative. *Create elementary literacy indicators for tiered instruction and work with administrators and teachers in placing students with appropriate interventions. *In association with the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, be responsible for various human resources activities including hiring, training and development, observation and feedback, and related activities. *Facilitate regular meetings for elementary reading specialists to ensure and promote staff awareness of current best practices, techniques, information, and district requirements. *Promote Read for the Record Day (October) and I Love to Read Month (February). Communicate with Pearson regarding Read for the Record grant and distribute books. *Facilitate parent communication via PTSA meetings, letters, phone inquiries, and the reading page of the district website.
