Early Childhood Education Secretary

This Class II Secretary position provides clerical support at Community Education for the Early Childhood department.  This secretary will prepare mailings, schedule appointments, and maintain records and data.  Position requires strong computer skills, communication skills, attention to detail, effective organization, and ability to take direction from a supervisor.  Prior experience with spreadsheets is expected.  This is now a full-time 12-month/year position because we are expanding our preschool programming.

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Building Principal, the Assistant Principal is responsible for providing administrative assistance and administrative support to the Building Principal in providing educational leadership to staff and in overseeing the daily building operations, programs, and concerns.

Position Purpose
To assist the Principal in providing leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of a Middle School in order to promote the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law.  To provide leadership in program development and improvement, as well as in professional staff development. To serve as Principal in the absence of the Principal.

Essential Functions Additional Duties
Provides direct student services related to student management, discipline, and student academic achievement.Coordinates and implements student discipline and attendance programs at assigned grade levels.  Enforces rules and procedures; supervises students in the building, school grounds, the parking lot, cafeteria, hallways, and assemblies.  Follows up with parents and/or staff regarding discipline or truancy referrals.  Makes decisions concerning discipline and suspensions.
Participates and assists in supervising events, functions, or activities within the building/district, as requested.
Assists the Principal and collaborates with teachers and other staff on matters of improving student achievement within the building and district or in the daily enforcement and application of district and building policies and procedures.
Deals a wide variety of student behavior including truancy, child neglect, suspensions, expulsion, class behavior, bus conduct, or other behavioral issues, and documents disciplinary actions.
Keeps records on student discipline and attendance.
Collaborates with counselors, activities personnel, law enforcement, and staff in dealing with student management issues.
Constructs yearly schedules and works with students with scheduling issues.
Supervises and evaluates teachers and departments, as requested by the Principal.Conducts teacher observations and formal performance evaluations. Provides mentoring to staff and provides direction in their career and professional development.
Assists staff in understanding building and district policies, procedures, and requirements.
Assists in recruiting, screening, selection, assignment, and training of new personnel.
Performs a variety of public relations functions, concerning building level issues and discipline.Confers with teachers, counselors, parents, support personnel, and students on matters of discipline and welfare.Monitors and assists in the coordination of building security and safety.  Assists in formulating and implementing procedures to safeguard the safety of students and staff.
Collaborates and serves on district or building level committees, task forces, and administrative meetings to address educational issues and operations, as delegated by the Principal.

Provides professional expertise and assistance to individuals, other district staff, and the community concerning

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Travel Requirements
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
Knowledge of Middle school curriculum and concepts.
Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision.
Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.
Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to develop and implement projects.
Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Work in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License:Minnesota State Certification as required for position.
Teaching Certification.
Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
EducationBachelor’s and Masters Degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in School Administration.
K-12 licensure in Administration.
ExperienceExtensive successful teaching experience, preferably at the middle School level, and preferably in more than one grade level.
Successful experience as an administrator preferred.
