Principal Intern – Aspiring Principal Academy
OVERVIEW Aspiring Principal Interns are exceptional, motivated leaders with an urgent desire to transform underperforming urban schools and dramatically increase student achievement. Principal Interns are participants in MPS’ rigorous, full-time Aspiring Principal Academy. Over 12 months, they develop and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful transformational principals in MPS, while working towards a MN K-12 principal license. Upon successful completion of a four-week summer intensive, Aspiring Principal Interns engage in a full academic-year residency at an MPS school. They assume leadership responsibilities, while being mentored by school principals and coached by program facilitators. They also engage in weekly professional development seminars and attend classes offered by our University partner. They complete rigorous, standards-aligned assignments. Commitment and Performance Expectations Principal Interns must complete each phase of the Aspiring Principal Academy to successfully advance through the program. Successful graduates of the Academy will be eligible for principal licensure through a partnership with our accredited University. They will apply for open principal positions in the district and will be required to fulfill a 3-year service commitment to work in MPS. Director of Special Education
JOB SUMMARY: The Special Education Director is responsible for providing leadership and assistance to teachers, principals, district administrators, and the community in to ensure that all students with disabilities are served appropriately and to assist the district with maximizing their state and federal funding. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *Provide leadership in establishing new programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs. *Develop procedures for referral, securing medical reports, psychological examination and placement. *Follow procedures for requisitioning, ordering and paying for special education equipment and supplies. *Assume responsibility for professional growth and development; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate professional meeting and conventions. *Ensure compliance with state and federal due process procedures. *Serve as a resource to staff and administration on revisions and district interpretation and implementation of mandates. *Assist in the compliance at the site level with ADA and Section 504 mandates and provide training as needed. *Serve as a building level resource to principals, assistant principals, and lead teachers concerning special education issues. *Process and manage all tuition billing for the district resident and non-resident students, and Pines School. *Special education staff in-service. *Facilitate setting IV out of district placement for special educations students in need of such services. *Contribute to the development of the district’s philosophy of special education. *Assist in the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs. *Recommend policies and programs essential to the needs of exceptional children. *Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education and serve as support and technical assistance for legal issues. *Develop budget recommendations and provides expenditure control on established budgets for special education. *Interpret the objectives and programs of the special education services to the Board, the administration, the staff and the public at large. *Collaboratively develop a plan for district-wide special education staff development with staff and building administration. *Manage and maintain the Special Education budget. *Enter and report special education expenditures into the EDRS system for the school district. *Assist building administration with determining professional and paraprofessional staff needs. *Oversee the Early Childhood Special Education Program and its coordinator. *Serve as district Homeless Liaison. *File Application paperwork with MDE yearly to assure continued funding. *MDE fiscal audit: data collection, host and provide information for monitor, review and correct fiscal report, implement corrective action. *Develop and maintain T.S.E.S. (Total Special Education System). *Work with district MARSS Coordinators to accurately report special education student data, deal with issues and changes in MARSS reporting rules.
