Elementary Special Education Teachers

Position Summary: As an Owatonna Special Education teacher, you have the opportunity to set the tone for learning for the rest of a student’s life. When students have a personalized, educational, and happy experience during their school years, they are more prepared to take on the challenges of life, including college and/or careers. You are able to teach students to love learning and also how to overcome the challenges and obstacles they face that keep them from reaching their goals. While adhering to the core curriculum required by the state, you are able to find creative, engaging ways to teach students real-life application of the concepts they are learning.

4 positions available.

Qualifications:
Valid MN Elementary Teaching license and Special Education license. Demonstrated use of 21st Century strategies and approaches to ensure all learners achieve the highest levels. Positive behavior intervention supports and MTSS preferred. Experience in utilizing an inquiry approach to instruction across all content areas and a background in STEM and Everyday Math beneficial.

Responsibilities:
A special education teacher will work in one of several special education licensure areas. The duties of each of these positions may vary. The essential functions of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties.  Provide instruction in the core curriculum and special education area(s) for which employed; make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies. Develop and implement innovative methods for providing instruction to special education students. Maintain a suitable instructional environment for special education students according to their needs; ensure that equipment is modified, and materials adapted as necessary.
Participate with other special education staff as appropriate to evaluate the special education needs of a student and to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to meet the student’s needs; implement these plans in accordance with special education state and federal legal requirements and district practice. Maintain student records and ensure that they are in compliance with due process requirements. Support the Minnesota Learning Standards; implement the goals and objectives of the District and the school and/or program to which assigned.
Evaluate special education student performance in accordance with the system used by the school and/or District; promote student achievement; ensure that progress is being made toward IEP goals and objectives; make related reports to parents, the principal, and/or Special Education administration as prescribed or authorized.
Maintain contact and communications with parents of special education students and work with them in the academic development of the student, and to meet the objectives of the IEP or IFSP; participate in parent-teacher conferences. Perform classroom management duties; enforce rules governing the conduct of students; take appropriate disciplinary action with students when necessary. Provide indirect services to special education students in the special education category for which employed. Develop and present in-service training relating to disabilities and the educational needs of students in the special education category for which employed. Continue to seek professional growth and development in the curriculum area(s) for which employed; attend professional development required by the District. Contribute to the District’s Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Middle School Yearbook/Journalism Arts Teacher (.83 FTE)

Position Summary: Owatonna Middle School is seeking a student-focused educator to lead our Yearbook / Journalism Arts program. This position gives students the opportunity to develop skills in photography, graphic design, visual storytelling, and multimedia communication while producing the school’s annual yearbook.

The teacher will guide students through the full publication process—from gathering stories and photos to designing layouts and preparing the final product. The course emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and authentic learning experiences where students help capture and tell the story of their school year.

Responsibilities:

– Teach middle school courses focused on yearbook production and journalism arts.

– Guide students through the planning, design, and publication of the Owatonna Middle School yearbook.

– Provide instruction in photography, graphic design, page layout, and visual storytelling.

– Support students in developing written and multimedia content, including captions, interviews, and short articles.

– Coordinate student photography coverage of school events and activities.

– Teach and model responsible journalism practices, including interviewing, fact-checking, and ethical media use.

– Support students in working collaboratively to meet publication timelines and production deadlines.

– Organize digital photos and yearbook assets and collaborate with staff to ensure broad representation of student experiences.

Qualifications:

– Valid Minnesota Art or Language Arts  teaching license (or ability to obtain before the start of the school year)) required.

– Ability to create an engaging, student-centered learning environment required.

– Experience or interest in photography, graphic design, journalism, or multimedia communication – preferred.

– Familiarity with digital design and publishing tools used in yearbook production – preferred.

– Experience supporting project-based learning – preferred.

Early Childhood Family Education Teacher/Preschool Teacher

Position Summary:
Owatonna Public Schools is seeking a qualified early childhood educator to join the Early Childhood Program. This position plays a vital role as one of the first points of contact for families entering the district, helping to establish positive relationships and a strong foundation for future learning. The educator will deliver high-quality early learning experiences through the implementation of evidence-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.

The successful candidate will plan and facilitate the child-focused portion of Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes, providing engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children ages 1–5, often alongside their parents. This role includes collaborating with a licensed parent educator who leads the parent education component. In addition, this position includes planning and teaching one preschool section of Little Huskies three-year-olds, with a focus on creating engaging, play-based learning experiences that support early development.

This role involves a variable schedule, including up to two evenings per week. Due to evening programming, the position offers flexibility with adjusted start times on applicable days. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to collaboration and contribute to a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for children, families, and colleagues.

Qualifications:
Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Family Education, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field; a valid Minnesota teaching license in Early Childhood (Birth to Age 5) and/or Birth–Grade 3; and strong knowledge of child development from birth through age five.

Candidates must demonstrate experience working with children and families from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as documented experience applying the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the use of research-based instructional strategies to support high levels of learning for all students and experience utilizing an inquiry-based approach to instruction.

Desired qualifications include:
Successful candidates will have at least two years of experience partnering with preschool families to support school readiness and early development. Experience in developing, implementing, and adapting curriculum and learning environments for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families is required.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team to support the positive development of children and families from diverse backgrounds. Strong interpersonal skills, including effective verbal, written, and digital communication, are essential, along with solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.

Position Requirements:
Successful experience in partnering with families in a professional capacity. The successful applicant must have the ability to work as a contributing team member in a culture of excellence to deliver programs that address the positive development of children and families in diverse populations. This position requires schedule flexibility and availability for two evenings per week, currently from 3:45-5:00 pm.

Coordinator of Educational Equity and ML Programming

Position Summary: The Coordinator of Educational Equity and ML Programming provides leadership and advocacy for programs and services to support students and staff in the area of equity and ML Programming. This position will promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, embracing differences as a strategic opportunity towards leading the District’s efforts to build a culture of equality and embodiment for all students, families, employees, and the community.

Position Requirements:
– Bachelor’s Degree in Education
– Valid State of Minnesota EL Teaching License
– Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or a similar degree – preferred
– Valid Minnesota K-12 Administrative licensure or the ability to obtain – preferred
– Supervisory and Budgetary Experience – preferred
– A minimum of 5 years of EL teaching experience – preferred
– Demonstrated deep understanding of one’s own identity and the ability to effectively collaborate across differences.
– Demonstrated knowledge and application of theory related to the developmental process of building intercultural competence.
– Ability to engage in ongoing professional/personal development in order to develop self and to maintain a current knowledge base in the fields of education and equity.

Schedule: 230 days per year // 7:30 am – 4 pm

Rate of Pay: D-6-1 // $90,189 – $129,563 depending on experience, knowledge, and education.
