Director of Community Education
General Definition of Work
Performs professional work planning, organizing and supervising community education facilities, activities, programs, staff and events, enforcing rules, preparing reports, developing procedures, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work involves setting policies and goals under the direction of the Superintendent. Departmental supervision is exercised over all personnel within the department.

Assigns, directs and reviews department staff work; recommend s hiring, transferring, suspending, disciplining, and terminating department staff; evaluates staff performance; coaches and/or counsels staff.
Creates, administers and monitors the departmental budget including allocating resources, payroll and approving expenditures.
Manages community education facilities outside the school day including decision making, policy interpretations and other issues.
Participates on various community committees.
Oversees the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures of the department, or as directed by the Superintendent or School Board. Performs needs assessment for the community and evaluates the requirements of programs and markets.
Attends various meetings, seminars, conferences, etc.
Maintain s appropriate marketing and publicity relationships; presents and networks with local association s and municipalities.
Conducts and coordinates departmental administrative meetings.
Prepares and submits internal and external reports to local, state, and federal agencies regarding program statistics,
standards and reimbursements.
Oversees the development and implementation of the district’s early childhood programs, policies and procedures for the department. Creates and coordinates opportunities for Austin Public Schools to inform, listen to, and involve the staff and community in the mission of the early childhood program.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Grant writing for and Administration of the Voluntary Pre-K program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of a community education department operation; thorough knowledge of the program areas in community education; thorough knowledge in creating and monitoring a department budget ; thorough knowledge of state and federal funding for community education; thorough knowledge of community programs and related rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of facility planning, programming and operations; ability to maintain order in a public facility; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants , associates and the genera l public.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’ s degree i n education, administration, or related field and extensive experience managing or overseeing a community education facility, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standi ng, walking and sitting and occasionally requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing , stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling , lifting and repetitive motions; work bas standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
Minnesota Community Education Director License.
Minnesota K-12 Principals License Preferred
