Summary of Scope of Classification

This class is accountable for facilitating communication between deaf/hard of hearing students and others by interpreting in educational settings.  Participates as a member of the educational team serving these students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of;
    • American Sign Language (ASL), Pigeon Sign English (PSE), Spoken English, and Minimal Language Signing modes;
    • child development.
  • Skilled in:
    • ASL;
    • customer service;
    • problem-solving;
    • effective time management and prioritization
  • Considerable ability to:
    • communicate effectively, listening, oral, and written;
    • establish rapport with others and to interact effectively with persons having a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds;
    • handle multiple issues simultaneously;

  • Ability to:
    • take a visual language and interpret it into English structural sentences, and the reverse;
    • process signs while simultaneously voice interpreting;
    • Interpret at an educational level and language mode appropriate to each individual;
    • give priority for facilitating communication of deaf/hard of hearing students within a hearing environment in both the spoken word into sign language, and voice interpreting sign language into English;
    • be prompt, responsible and dependable;
    • use computer software applications to accomplish work tasks.

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes current methods of interpreting to best serve deaf/hard of hearing students, staff and deaf parents with their communication needs;
  • Interprets spoken English into sign language for all communication in a school day, such as classroom, lectures, lab or other educational settings where conversations between deaf/hard of hearing students and anyone else are taking place;
  • Takes notes for students in various educational settings.  Prepares lecture notes, ensuring accurate interpretation;
  • Previews videotapes, PowerPoint and other media presentations in preparation for interpreting for deaf/hard of hearing students;
  • Interprets at student orientation sessions, various meetings and activities between students and student groups and staff.  Also interprets at IEP meetings;
  • Meets regularly with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher regarding the progress of individual students.  Works closely with team teachers to ensure that accommodations are made for students;
  • Receives some work direction from licensed staff, including Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher;
  • Attends mentoring sessions with an assigned mentor and/or attends staff development sessions to maintain and upgrade skills;
  • As a member of the educational team, performs other related duties such as tutoring, job coaching, copying materials, driving and other duties necessary to facilitate the students’ education;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Providing leadership to staff in determining objectives and identifying long-term and short-range program needs;
  • Coordinating and supervising of program activities;
  • Overall supervision of the facility;
  • Maintaining the safety security and well-being of students and staff;
  • Providing feedback, support and assistance to licensed instructional staff regarding Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), Positive Behavioral Support Plans (PBSP), Three-Year Reevaluations, Child Study documentation, and other related areas;
  • Mediating staff-staff, staff-student, and student-student issues as needed;
  • Developing and monitoring program goals and objectives for the school;
  • Facilitating team meetings and updates staff with pertinent information;
  • Assigning students in a way as to encourage their optimal growth and make periodic appraisals their progress;
  • Adhering to the enforcement of board policy, school guidelines, administrative directives, the master contract, and district standards;
  • Developing and preparing reports and paperwork relating to discipline, suspension, injury, and expulsion;
  • Participating in staff selection, evaluation, and professional development;
  • Maintaining order and structure in the absence of the principal;
  • Presenting information about the school to parents, students, and others;
  • Facilitating professional meetings, professional learning, and other trainings through the principal;
  • Advising, counseling, and assisting instructional and support personnel in problem solving activities pertaining to student performance and behavior to determine appropriate solutions;
  • Managing special assignments and initiatives as assigned;
  • Communicating and coordinating with member district representatives and parents as needed;
  • Attending Team and Individual Educational Planning meetings;
  • Assisting in the planning, scheduling and supervision of student activities;
  • Assisting in the maintaining of effective community relations in an effort with outside organizations to foster mutual respect for and collaboration on joint ventures;
  • Assisting with the operational effectiveness of the program including planning, supervising and directing the business operation of the program in accordance with District policy and procedures;
  • Assisting in the planning and implementing of program plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline, and conduct of students;
  • Developing creative ways to deliver a successful curriculum to students;
  • Maintaining effective relationships within the District and with member districts;
  • Maintaining regular attendance and providing proper notice of leave.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The classroom teacher shall:
1. Make provisions in the classroom utilizing the philosophy that all children can learn as per mission statement.
2. Teach curriculum as per scope and sequence and/or department curriculum.
3. Modify curriculum as appropriate and as needed in the curriculum review cycle.
4. Provide an appropriate opportunity for students to master the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.
5. Provide in a timely fashion the necessary documentation for completing the materials adoption process when appropriate.
6. Develop, implement and evaluate personal and professional instructional goals with the assistance of the building principal as part of ongoing staff development.
7. Identify and provide a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
8. Prepare for classes assigned and provide written evidence of preparation per building procedures.
9. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, consistent with the district’s philosophy, and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicate these objectives to students.
10. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district’s educational philosophy and instructional goals and objectives.
11. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
12. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
13. Develop reasonable rules for classroom behavior and related procedures.
14. Maintain order in the classroom in a consistently fair and just manner.
15. Employ a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media and assessment tools.
16. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provide timely feedback to students, and provide progress reports as required.
17. Assess student progress towards mastery of the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards as appropriate.
18. Identify any learning and behavioral difficulties of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists and the Individual Education Team meeting.
19. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
20. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, Board policy and administrative regulation.
21. Assist the administration in implementing Board policies and rules.
22. Encourage parent/guardian involvement by taking an active role and being available to students and parents/guardians for education-related purposes when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
23. Maintain effective lines of communication among staff, parents/guardians and supervisors to assist in the education of each child.
24. Serve as a role model by demonstrating a positive attitude, appropriate dress, timeliness, proper preparation and strong work habits.
25. Be responsible for students in his/her charge and for any and all students of the school during the school day and during school functions.
26. Work cooperatively with all staff, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and be supportive of other building/district programs.
27. Take responsibility for staying professionally current.
28. Attend all building faculty, department and Individual Education Plan (IEP) staffings and meetings as required or upon request.
29. Assume all other responsibilities and perform all other duties as assigned by the building principal or person designated by the district administrator.
