Special Services Director

What is the opportunity? The Wayzata Public School District is a steadily growing school district which currently serves approximately 11,000 students. We are currently seeking a Special Services Director. As the Special Services Director you will have overall responsibilities for the administration of services to students within the programs of: Special Education, Title I, EL and Health Services in accordance with all applicable State and Federal laws, statutes, rules, and regulations. This currently entails services provided at 8 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and one high school and our Early Learning Center. For specific details on duties and qualifications please see attached formal position description. What are we looking for? Confident Decision Maker: This is a position in which you will be faced with making decisions that affect staff and students. While you will have the support of the Special Services Supervisors and building administrators, you will often be required to make critical decisions quickly and responsibly. Collaborator: In this role you must work collaboratively with others across the district. In order to be effective, you must partner with building administrators, parents, staff and other professionals. Approachable and Supportive Leader: This position requires a genuine leader that is present in the role. We are looking for a candidate who enjoys providing support and mentorship to supervisors and employees. Subject Matter Expert: We are looking for a candidate that knows Special Services inside and out. The ideal candidate will have experience working in with a variety of age groups and be an expert with due process. In addition to being the inhouse expert for building and central office staff, you will be relied upon to provide expertise to the community.

ESL TEACHER

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Develop the social and academic language skills of English Language Learners (ELLs) through effective language instruction practices that focus on the four language domains. Assess student language skills for placement, service, exiting and monitoring of ELL students. Prepare ESL course objectives, curriculum, resources, and outline for course that integrates English Language Proficiency standards and district guidelines. Collaborate with mainstream/content teachers to support the academic content learning of English Language Learners. Administer assessments to evaluate student progress and inform students and parents of progress. Keep attendance records. Maintain discipline in classroom and support acclimation to U.S. educational system and district requirements. Meet with parents to discuss student progress and problems. Assist school staff to develop meaningful ELL family involvement and outreach activities. Support school staff by maintaining a high knowledge base of the latest research, laws, most effective practices, and issues in the field Consult with other building professionals such as Title 1, Special Education, Gifted and Talented and others to assure neither the under nor over representation of LEP student referrals to other programs. Receive training in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), implement content and language objectives daily and support general education teachers in implementing SIOP components. Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops. Perform related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems.

A special education teacher will work in one of several special education licensure areas. The duties or each of these positions may vary. The essential functions of these positions include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties. *Provide instruction in the core curriculum and special education area(s) for which employed; make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies. *Develop and implement innovative methods for providing instruction to special education students. *Maintain a suitable instructional environment for special education students according to their needs; ensure that equipment is modified and materials adapted as necessary. *Participate with other special education staff as appropriate to evaluate the special education needs of a student and to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to meet the student’s needs; implement these plans in accordance with special education state and federal legal requirements and district practice. *Maintain student records and ensure that they are in compliance with due process requirements. *Support the Minnesota Graduation Standards; implement the goals and objectives of the District and the school and/or program to which assigned. *Evaluate special education student performance in accordance with the system used by the school and/or District; promote student achievement; ensure that progress is being made toward IEP goals and objectives; make related reports to parents, the principal and/or Special Education administration as prescribed or authorized. *Maintain contact and communications with parents of special education students and work with them in the academic development of the student and to meet the objectives of the IEP or IFSP; participate in parent teacher conferences. *Perform classroom management duties; enforce rules governing the conduct of students; take appropriate disciplinary action with students when necessary. *Provide indirect services to special education students in the special education category for which employed. *Develop and present in-service training relating to disabilities and the educational needs of students in the special education category for which employed. *Continue to seek professional growth and development in the curriculum area(s) for which employed; attend professional development required by the District. *Contribute to the District’s Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources. *Perform other related duties as assigned.
