Assignment Location: Alliance Education Center, Rosemount, MN, Students with Unique Needs (SUN) Program Starting Date: February 20, 2016 Assignment Duration: Approximately two months POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Assistant Director/Principal, the long-term substitute teacher for Intermediate School District 917’s SUN program at Alliance Education Center will play a vital role in providing a consistent, safe environment conducive to learning by following the plans and procedures put in place by the classroom teacher and by utilizing the skills and knowledge of the program staff. In this role, one helps model and encourage respect, communication, and competency during student work tasks and during socialization. Professionalism, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach are essential when working with students receiving special education services to ensure their safety and growth and in order to help them understand and exhibit appropriate behaviors at school and in the community. The special education long-term substitute teacher will be stepping into a team environment daily, where collaboration, communication, and adaptability are key to the success of the individual, the team, and the success of the students. The substitute teacher role is performed following District policy and State/Federal Laws. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assist classroom staff in providing instruction and managing student educational programming. 2. Facilitate activities with a student or small group under the direction of the teacher, based on lesson plans and daily routines established by the teacher. 3. Creates and translates lesson plans into learning experiences in a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies. 4. Help to maintain safety of all students and the environment. 5. Utilize proactive behavior management techniques, reinforcing positive behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques, and redirecting inappropriate behaviors. May be required to use restrictive procedures. 6. Assist students in their daily routines, including escorting students during arrival and departure and to special classes or therapy, providing supervision in school areas such as lunch, the playground or gym, and at school related activities off site. 7. Assist students with developing appropriate social skills and behavior, through a variety of methods including modeling, lessons, incentive plans, and charting. 8. Collaborate and communicate effectively with paraprofessionals and other program/school staff in order to meet the current needs of students and maintain a positive work environment for all. 10. Encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process, responding to the needs of individual learners. 12. The position will include: facilitate support groups, study strategies, time management/organization, new student group, and implement interventions for struggling students. Position would coordinate academic interventions between teachers and students. Counselor must exhibit ability to manage and track multiple students’ academic progress and needs, act as a liaison between EL department, teachers, Deans, and School Counselors. This position will require attention to detail, knowledge of googledocs, and the ability to collaborate with multiple staff in the building. Special Teacher – Intermittent
