Special Education Teacher – Functional Academic Needs

Mahtomedi Public Schools is looking for a highly motivated special education teacher to create a program for students with functional academic needs.  Candidates who welcome the challenge of creating new opportunities for students are encouraged to apply to join our team!

About the Position:

Location:  Mahtomedi Middle School
Caseload:  Approximately 10 students
Student Eligibility Categories:  DCD, ASD, PI, OHD
Other:  One hour of prep and one hour of case management each day
Due Process Assistants manage scheduling of meetings and filing paperwork

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree; Special Education DCD, ASD or ABS teaching license or able to obtain appropriate license from PELSB, Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board

Preferred Experience:

Ability to teach students with significant needs in the areas of social, emotional, adaptive and/or academic development utilizing a progression of interventions.

The ideal candidate should be passionate about creating a dynamic, highly structured program environment that provides direct instruction to a variety of learning needs with an emphasis on functional academic skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify the needs of assigned students with disabilities through formal and informal assessments
  • Plan, develop and implement appropriate lessons to ensure the achievement of student growth
  • Communicate with students, parents and staff on a regular basis on student progress
  • Write IEP’s (Individual Educational Plans) and Due Process reports in accordance to MDE regulations
  • Attend department, school and parent meetings
  • Provide program guidance to paraprofessionals

Early Childhood Special Education Teacher – .7 to 1.0

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum of bachelor’s degree and a MN Early Childhood Special Education license or able to obtain appropriate license from PELSB, Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board  PELSB.

Must have strong communication skills and previous experience preferred working with IEP/IFSP goals and outcomes and the ability to meet critical deadlines.

Previous experience serving students with a variety of special needs including DD, ASD, EBD and PI.

Job Summary:  

Responsible for providing an educational environment that will help students with disabilities in learning and fulfill their growth potential.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify the needs of assigned students with disabilities through formal and informal assessments.
  • Plan and implement appropriate educational programs for individuals.
  • Communicate with parents and staff on a regular basis on student progress
  • Collaborate with students, families, related service providers, outside agencies, and other team members to promote growth of each student.
  • Write IEP’s (Individual Educational Plans) or IFSPs (Individualized Family Service Plans) and Due Process reports in accordance to MDE regulations
  • Conduct assessments, comprehensive report results, and follow Minnesota state criteria in area(s) of special education eligibility as well as mandated timelines.
  • Provide work direction to paraprofessional staff members if applicable.
  • Attend district professional development as well as department, school and parent meetings
  • Understand and maintain boundaries and confidentiality with students, families and staff.
  • Ability to travel between sites as needed.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

This position is flexible to be .70 up to 1.0 and is housed out of Wildwood Elementary, E-2 building.  Salary and benefits are part of the Master Agreement.

Essential Functions:

Deliver classroom instruction; implement lesson plans on instructional units; develop and determine methods, approaches and instructional units; maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.

Assess and evaluate student performance against lesson plans; determine the need for re-instruction or need for new approach; reinforce information previously taught in the classroom; determine grades for reporting purposes; monitor student performance and behaviors and determine how to approach bad behaviors.

Develop and plan instructional activities; develop and implement lesson plans personalized for individual student needs; assist in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs); implement student assessments and evaluate results; determine assessment process for instructional units; research topics and materials designed to improve instructional presentations.

Prepare for substitute teachers; communicate with parents and participate in parent/student conferences; participate and prepare for peer evaluation process.

Supervise students during the school day according to the established building schedule; provide indirect supervision during regular school days.

Collaborate with staff in evaluating individual student issues and approaches to instructional units; evaluate new teaching technologies and/or procedures.

Participate in meetings (building staff meetings, departmental meetings, grade level meetings, staff development, open house/orientation) as necessary or required; attend professional development activities.

JOB FUNCTION:
To help students master subject matter and skills in a learning environment which allows for the intellectual, physical, emotional, cultural, social and ethical growth of children in a changing world.

REPORTS TO:
Building principal or person designated by the district administrator.

SUPERVISES:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The classroom teacher shall:
1. Make provisions in the classroom utilizing the philosophy that all children can learn as per mission statement.
2. Teach curriculum as per scope and sequence and/or department curriculum.
3. Modify curriculum as appropriate and as needed in the curriculum review cycle.
4. Provide an appropriate opportunity for students to master the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.
5. Provide in a timely fashion the necessary documentation for completing the materials adoption process when appropriate.
6. Develop, implement and evaluate personal and professional instructional goals with the assistance of the building principal as part of ongoing staff development.
7. Identify and provide a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
8. Prepare for classes assigned and provide written evidence of preparation per building procedures.
9. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, consistent with the district’s philosophy, and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicate these objectives to students.
10. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district’s educational philosophy and instructional goals and objectives.
11. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
12. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
13. Develop reasonable rules for classroom behavior and related procedures.
14. Maintain order in the classroom in a consistently fair and just manner.
15. Employ a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media and assessment tools.
16. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provide timely feedback to students, and provide progress reports as required.
17. Assess student progress towards mastery of the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards as appropriate.
18. Identify any learning and behavioral difficulties of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists and the Individual Education Team meeting.
19. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
20. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, Board policy and administrative regulation.
21. Assist the administration in implementing Board policies and rules.
22. Encourage parent/guardian involvement by taking an active role and being available to students and parents/guardians for education-related purposes when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
23. Maintain effective lines of communication among staff, parents/guardians and supervisors to assist in the education of each child.
24. Serve as a role model by demonstrating a positive attitude, appropriate dress, timeliness, proper preparation and strong work habits.
25. Be responsible for students in his/her charge and for any and all students of the school during the school day and during school functions.
26. Work cooperatively with all staff, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and be supportive of other building/district programs.
27. Take responsibility for staying professionally current.
28. Attend all building faculty, department and Individual Education Plan (IEP) staffings and meetings as required or upon request.
29. Assume all other responsibilities and perform all other duties as assigned by the building principal or person designated by the district administrator.
