Position Overview

Primary Responsibilities
Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

The counselor provides services to students, staff and families in the areas of personalized learning, guidance and counseling, school and classroom learning environment, and building leadership and supervision.

Personalized Learning, Guidance and Counseling

  • Primary advocate for aligning work of adults, including parents, teachers, and other appropriate staff, to meet student needs, interests, and aspirations
  • Work with students and families to develop, access, and use learner profiles and personal learner mapsCreate avenues for ongoing communication, and conduct face-to-face meetings with each student and family on their caseload at least once a year
  • Provide support services for students and parents in the area of academic programs, registration, course planning and selection, to achieve 12 college credits by 12th grade
  • Work with new students and parents for a successful transition to the school, including development of a personalized onboarding plan
  • Confer with students and parents on student learning style and preferences, interests and aspirations
  • Provide personalized and proactive college and career planning with students and familiesInterpret test results to students, teachers and parents
  • Utilize data for the purposes of student planning, placement, and growth
  • Provide information regarding scholarships, dates of college entrance and placement tests, and other post-high school matters
  • Provide the opportunity for students to meet with college representatives and career speakers
  • Provide appropriate referral to other “pit crew” members (student & family advocates, school psychologists, behavior specialists, assistant principals, etc.), or provide short-term support services as appropriate, for students needing crisis intervention, emotional/social support and/or conflict resolution
  • Develops and implements 504 plans, as appropriate
  • School and Classroom Learning EnvironmentPartner with school administration and teachers in implementing consistent school and staff expectations and practices, leading to a welcoming and culturally proficient learning community
  • Supports teachers and parents in addressing student behaviors related to, or impacting, learning (e.g., academic dishonesty, attendance, tardies, work completion)
  • Collaborate with behavior specialists, dean of student, and assistant principals to develop, implement, and refine targeted behavior support plans
  • Provides a channel of communication for students to express concerns about the school program
  • Administration Partner in regular building-level leadership meetings with school administration
  • Assist building administration with supervision of after school and evening functions
  • Assist with daily student supervision as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

We strongly prefer candidates who have exhibited excellence in collaboration with colleagues and an enthusiasm to work with students.  Preferred candidates will also have a demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning as evidenced by graduate-level work or an earned degree, as well as participation in professional organization conferences or seminars related to the content area.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have earned a B.A. or B.S. or higher degree in education or a related area. Counselors will be licensed in one of the following areas: guidance/counseling, special education, social work, teaching or administration (may be enrolled in an administrative program).

Applicants must have the ability and skills to relate to students and be sensitive to their needs, to provide a positive behavioral atmosphere for students, to work cooperatively with individuals and teams, the willingness and skills to use technology, and must have excellent communication with students, parents, and staff. Experience:  Basic child development educational background or knowledge, guidance and counseling.

Licensing Requirements
Current Minnesota license or eligibility is required.
Counselors will be licensed in one of the following areas: guidance/counseling, special education, social work, teaching or administration (may be enrolled in an administrative program).

Position Overview

This position offers the opportunity for a creative educator to design units of learning that engage K-4 students in multiple areas of the Minnesota Arts standards. The candidate for this position will:

  • Develop students’ interest, abilities, talents and skills for artistic expression and creativity in music, theater, and/or dance
  • Create an aesthetic understanding and appreciation of the arts by implementing culturally proficient and interdisciplinary approach to unit and lesson design
  • Combine foundational knowledge and skills in an art form with four processes fundamental to the arts:
  • Creating, Performing or Presenting, Responding, and Connecting
  • Develop and document meaningful unit designs including outcomes, assessments, relevant student work and learning experiences, and student progress toward outcomes
  • Model the necessary skills and provide examples of strong work for students
  • Provide a safe, fun and optimal learning environment
  • Provide feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student learning toward outcomes

The successful candidate will be an individual who:

  • has a strong desire to work with K-4th grade students and teach the knowledge and skills in music, theater, and/or dance to elementary school students, and other appropriate learning activities
  • is familiar with assessment for learning practices, including scaffolding learning for students with unique and varied needs
  • can collaborate with their colleagues to discuss instruction and assessment to meet the needs of the students
  • possesses a sense of responsibility for the learning of all of the students
  • has experience with learning technology tools and platforms

  • Provide curricular resources, digital tools, and materials that students need to implement the learning design;
  • Engage in student goal-setting to leverage student projects and learning experiences to demonstrate competency in multiple areas;
  • Provide “just-in-time” individual and small group instruction to identified students as needed;
  • Planning and tracking of graduation requirements with high school students;
  • Communicate with families; and
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues as a member of the Teacher/Facilitator team of Lighthouse School.

Preferences

Preference given to those candidates with a Certificate in Gifted Education or a Master’s degree in Gifted education. Previous experience working successfully with elementary or secondary level gifted students and employing differentiated instruction; knowledge and experience with inquiry based learning; and technology skills required. We strongly prefer candidates who have exhibited excellence in collaboration with colleagues and families, have a creative and flexible approach to new ideas and new ways of working, have advanced skills in using learning technology purposefully, and communicate clearly in a supportive and encouraging manner with families, students, and colleagues.

  • creating and delivering ability and age appropriate lessons in a setting 3 classroom;
  • leading a team of paraprofessionals in meeting students’ needs;
  • communicating with parents to provide regular updates on student successes and challenges;
  • Collaborating with principals, special education coordinator and staff, and professional learning communities, to ensure student needs are being met;
  • maintaining student records of services provided, following Due Process best practices and compliance;
    acting as a Case Manager for students in your classroom and participate in IEP and evaluation summary meetings; and
  • perform other related duties, as assigned.

Experience:

Desired previous experience/knowledge includes…

  • successfully working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and a strong desire to do so;
  • writing solid Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
  • applying current trends in the field of behavior interventions and support;
  • utilizing standardized assessment tools;
  • effectively collaborating with a team; and
  • constructively communicating with parent/guardian and team members.

Qualifications:

Must meet these qualifications…A current Minnesota Special Education Teaching License in ASD or ABS.
The ability to lift up to 50 pounds (and/or up to adult-size body weight with two-to-three-person lift).
